Title: Insurance Company's are bandits!!!
Post by: Greenouse on 24 April 2008, 15:38
Rang my insurer's earlier today (Privilege) to inform them I was changing my number plate to my personal plate. Thought I'd do the honest thing and tell them I had installed a Milltek cat back system. The robbing fu**ers have charged me an extra £57!!! That equates to nearly 10% of the premium. I find this totally unacceptable for a mod which offers little or no gain in performance.

As I was racked off to say the least, I asked what difference a re-map from 230 to around 300 would make, and to add insult to injury they said only £140  A mere £90 more than a mod which has virtually no performance gains!! Yes they bang on about visually improving the car, but who the hell would spot it, unless you pointed it out? (apart from most of you lot that is!)

What gets my goat up is that these people refuse to treat you as an individual, and are unwilling to take you on that basis. I have a no claims record going back over ten years! And they still feel the need to rob you blind at any given opportunity. OK £57 is not a great deal of money, but compared with the premium, and my claims history/age etc I feel they are taking the pi**.

What kind of money have you guys had to pay for mods? I've gotta be honest it's putting me off doing any more to the car! Why should I line there already bulging pockets!!

Rant over, step down from soap box!

i agree, however its not just because of performance, it also comes down to how much they have to pay to repair the car, if the car is more likely to get broken into, stolen etc etc...

£57 is nothing and id be happy, but then im young so i expect to get an answer like "you do that and we cannot insure you" answer..

couldnt think what they would say if i mentioned a remap.. lol

(tesco)

I don't know exactly Steve, but I'd be amazed if the VW part wasn't near the £400 mark

i was with privelege for my ST, and was only charged £80 for remap, intercooler, brakes etc, but then one year they said they couldnt insure me anymore, and in fact shouldnt have renewed me last time ??!!!, i have never had a claim and have nearly 20 years ncb with no fines or points etc!!, really couldnt understand why the wouldnt renew !!.
one thing i have noticed about the ED30 though is the remap costs at least double for the extra as to what it did for the ST to insure (i.e £80 for remap on ST and £155 on the ed30)

It might be worth trying other insurance companies. My hubby insures his Scooby with A Plan (as recommended by his club site) and was charged no extra when he informed them about a full Prodrive exhaust, remap and suspension mods. They were also much cheaper than the best price found by confused.com even when standard

Everytime this subject comes up I say the same thing. Forget the direct writers and get yourself a good broker.

The direct boys have no underwriting skill and the monkeys you talk to are nothing more than order takers. Get a broker that understands your risk, as they generally have a good relationship with actual underwriters (which I am)at the insurance company.

The big boys are rubbish with modifications. Check our insurance section and see if Martin can be of any help.
