Hi , we have a 16v MK3 GTi, 1993 Rally car, My son [15 yrs]is using it in Latvia on Gravel. It has the ABF engine and I think the 02A box with the 3.68 CWP.
The car is on tall gravel tyres for the rallies, we want to lower the gearing.
WE have the lowest profile gravel tyres now, Is there a swap available in another box that would lower the final drive.
eg a 4.1 ratio or lower.
Or an aftermarket supplier
Any info gratefully recieved
Thanks Pat

try http://www.quaife.co.uk/ (http://www.quaife.co.uk/) as they make a 6 speed gearbox for the 02a 16v gearbox.... can't think of any others that will fit?

stick in a dog box mate! woahh it makes a diffrence on the track

i.d go for a mk2 1.8 gti box as its got lower ratio. clucth will av to macth the box tho. ie 1.8 clucth.
any smaller box will give lower ratio. as long as the caps on the end of the box r the same colour they will fit. hope this helps .thats always my first mod and the best one.

Thanks Dubmad, so the 1.8 clutch will still fit the mk3 16v box??
Do you know the ratios difference of the Mk 2 1.8 box, is it all the ratios or the final drive.
Sorry for all questions, we are new to VW, but will get a box and put it on Ryanair as "Sporting Goods" haha.

all the gears are lower ratio
/ not sure ov ratio off hand as i cant find book
. this is how i tell the diffrece.
20i box at 80mph is on 3000 revs and the 1.8i box at 80mph is on 4000/4500 revs both cars in 5th.. its just over a 1000 in every gear.
and the clucth will av to macth the box as they got diffrent sized centers and sometimes flywheel will av to be fitted
/ ive redrilled it to fit before now to fit but mostly they bolt strait on.
also make sure the cap on the end of the box are the same colour thats how you can tel if it fits the block / im puttin a 1.6 4 speed box on to my 20.i 8v which is going in my mk1 cab.thats going to be fun and very quick. as the mk2 1.8 gti box i put on my mk3 20 gti made hell of a diffrence. the fisrt ever car i dun it to was a mk 2 astra 16v with 8v box clucth and flywheel f***k me it would stay with evo's and scoobys and thats not a lie.
it lowers the top speed by about 20mph but its not shy getting there thats a cert.
