Title: Mk5 R32 Brake upgrade.
Post by: k4ith on 23 April 2008, 19:43
I have for some months now been searching for a MK5 R32 brake set up on here, other forums and ebay narrowly missing out on one set to a UKMKivs member for £350 .I managed to source the relevant part no's and called my local VW & Seat Parts Dept(same set us R32) The prices are different for what is essentially the same parts.Interesting prices to see end of my post, today though i am going to start with my build with what i think is a bargain! While speaking to someone at Awesome reg discs etc they mantioned i should try Euro Car Parts as they stock OEM parts too which i did and nearly fell of me seat, now VW charge £161 for 1 R32 calliper, euro car parts  advised £156 for 2 this is made up of £51.67, part plus 17.5% vat and £15 fee for non return of old calliper.I was sceptical that they would be pattern parts but when they arrived after less than 24hrs wait(VW or Seat couldn't even give a date in the month lol!) they are the gen article made by ATE with the VW & Audi stamp pic provided, only bad bit they dont do the carrier  :cry:I have to go to VW and wait.

are the R32 brakes any good ?, i had ATE brakes like the R32 ones on the ST and they used to fade quite easily !!!, so i swopped them for a set of AP's

No fade. but i do find the abs a bit crap at dealing with braking hard on bumpy surfaces.

In this months VW Driver an Ed30 driver has them fitted and he's happy, uses them for tackdays too.
312mm standard gti/ed30, 344mm r32 set up, I tried them on the MK2 Cupra and was happy about them.

I noticed that article too, he did have bigger 12pots which caused too much dust or something - says the R32's are fine.

I also used Euro Car parts for my brake pads when VW didnt have any UK stock and I needed some, genunie stamped parts cheaper

Sounds interesting. Isn't more convinient to order the Seat Cupra versions as these are painted red already AFAIK.

I just missed out on a set of R32 brakes going for 350 EUR on the German Ebay.

Could just be the way the pics are taken but they look a bit small, and the stamping is different to mine. Did you check part #'s to make sure they didn't send you rear calipers?

That was my first port of call as i had imagined that the R32 would come as blue and would req painting, but Seat & VW wanted the money up front and could not give me a delivery date, but i will have to do that anyway now unless i can get in touch with the manufacturer instead.

I am 100% sure they are the fronts, they weight a fair bit too.

They look a bit square to be fronts, have you compared them to the ones on your car?

After looking at the pic, it looks that these are rear brakes to be honest.

Looking at some pics from an eBay auction on R32 front brakes http://cgi.ebay.de/Golf-5-R32-Bremsanlage-komplett-Vorderachse_W0QQitemZ170212427541QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.de/Golf-5-R32-Bremsanlage-komplett-Vorderachse_W0QQitemZ170212427541QQcmdZViewItem), these look different.

The s3 kit looks better imo , the R32 are one single large pot like my old ST ones, if there that good maybe i should have kept them instead of selling them so cheap LOL

AFAIK the S3/R32/Cupra brakes are identical apart from color.
They're single pot and not the best brakes out there, but a relatively affordable OEM upgrade from the not-so-great GTI setup

I'm hoping the 10 pots I've ordered are better dust-wise. The 12 pots have much larger pads (almost double that of the R32 ones) and so shed quite a bit of dust, whereas the 10 pots have around 50% more. I'll live with the dust if the brakes are as good as I've been told

10 Pots, are you planning on re'arranging your internal organs  I assume they're a small piston design?

Yeah, they are small pistons in TAROX calipers.

hmm, you do need to ba careful with to many pots, you would probably get better results with 6 pots, but just wouldnt look as good i guess

Nice. What colour have you gone for. The Gun metal ones would look nice on your car.

I reckon the Porker 6 pots would be enough on a Golf
