Title: Headlight covers
Post by: lincolnmk5 on 23 April 2008, 13:26
What are your opions of these . My car came with them , the dealer said "they are cheaper to replace than a £200 unit" , but I feel they dont look so good . What do you think , should I remove them or keep them on? Anyone else use the ? Thanks all

Not appropriate for Xenons. My dealer would not fit them - due to extra heat generated.

Pleased actually - didn't really like them but part of protection kit, so I got a refund

I saw these at the dealers yesterday and thought they looked

I used to fit these to most cars I had, but found them ugly and a pain to keep clean. In my 17 years of driving I've never smashed a headlight through driving. When headlight lenses were made of glass I suppose they made sense.

Hey

In my opinion they look terrible. Are these the ones you are talking about? You can sort of see them on the right hand side light.

Excuse the pic. Its a random R32 that was parked next to the pub at my school  :undecided:

If you stay the recommended distance from the car in front you shouldn't get any stones flicked up and chip your lights or windscreen?

Welcome to the forum Lincoln

I can only reflect on what most of the other members who have posted on this thread have already said.

Best thing to do is start a quick poll on who has/hasn't had damage to their Golf headlights before. I bet it isn't many.

no i mean they dont fit them to zenons because it affects the light they emit therefore safety etc, i doubt its about heat from them

Basically. Minor dust particles or dirt particles on the lens can actually cause the light beams from the xenons to glare off at different angles which could affect an on coming driver. Hence why the headlight washers are law in the UK.

Not only is the lens cover about a cm away from the light (which already changes the aspect ratio of the beam) there is also a possibility of dirt becoming trapped under the lens cover which will as said, make the dirt particles refract and cause misery to oncoming drivers.

Heat apparently is not an issue with regards to the Xenons.

Thats about all I remember from a Post that Teutonic Tamer wrote up. Dont believe everything I say purely because I cant remember exactly what was said.

on the MK5 you can't have them becuase of the heat from the xenon full beam(thats the VW reason anyway), i've got the protectors on my MK4 xenons, and personally i'd say they are a must, the xenons on mine are £400 each (and are glass) so i'd rather spend £30 on a protectors than £800 on two new headlights

if you've got halogens (cheaper head light to replace) then i guess you could risk getting a stone chip

And they look gash

The ones I saw in the stealer yesterday had nasty silver edges, changing the whole look of the headlight! Nasty IMHO

tbh lately, id be more worried about what comes from behind you rather then your light lenses!, the ammount of accidents over the last few days with GTi's involved
