In my first valver after 4 8v's and its developed a smoking habit. There is a water leak from the flange on the the front being replaced tomorrow could that be anything to do with it or is it something to be more worried about.

Do the work you say you are going to do and see what happens. Where is the smoke coming from? Exhaust, under bonnet, air vents?
When does it smoke? On a run, from cold, acceleration, over-run?
Is it smoke or steam and what colour is it? White, black, blue, grey?
It could be a multitude of things. Its like phoning a doctor and saying my tummy hurts. Whats wrong with me? :undecided: More info needed.

Its blue smoke from the exhaust and it seems to do it most on revving but is there when idling with the occasional large puff  I have been constantly checking oil level and it doesnt appear to be using any or very little. Just looking at it makes me wonder how it passed the emissions?
Has been mentioned to me that timing could be an issue?

If you have blue smoke, then the engine is burning a little oil, probably past the rings. Get a compression test done and evaluate the results. Post the results up here, as any 'helpfull' information from the garage that does the test may be after business and could convince themselves, and you that an expensive repair is required. The chances are though, the engine may need at least a re-ring and a hone.

I have it booked in at midlandvw for a service and cambelt in a couple of weeks so will see what they have to say on it
-
If it's blue smoke I'd get it sorted ASAP and not wait for a service which will probably not sort the problem, as that could mean your engine goes BOOM!
-
Changed the flange which was totally shot so now getting coolant constantly and the smoking seems to be finished with? Still gonna get it given the once over mind
-
If you want to be sure about the rings then have a "dry" then a "wet" compression test done and that will tell you beyond doubt if you've got ring problems

Valve guides been done at any point?
-
Not that im aware of but intending to spend time on this one need something to keep me out the pub

Do the wet and dry compression test first. If that's OK then move on to the top end and consider doing valve guides.
