Title: Ipod Prep
Post by: DamoGTI on 22 April 2008, 13:52
Hi all,

Has anyone fitted an Ipod Prep to there Gti? I have been quoted £200 from my VW dealer.

I have an RCD300 and found this on Ebay - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Volkswagen-IPOD-Adapter-link-VW-Golf-Passat-RCD-300-UK_W0QQitemZ150238861946QQihZ005QQcategoryZ75307QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Is it hard to fit etc?

Cheers

Damo

Dont get either! The fatory kit is lame and ridiculously over priced. You dont even get track details and you can only play playlists.

I went for the Harman Kardon kit at £50+connects2(£30)+fitting. which works just like an ipod with full functionality.

i have it and have never used it, people say its not very good though !!, ps that ebay one isnt the genuine article, there is talk of a VW media slot coming out, i.e a USB hub, i personally would wait for that

pps do you not have a aux input on your car ?

thanks, Does that use the FM receiver or AUX cable?  Also do you have to plug it in to the cigarette lighter to get it to work?

cheers

Hi... Get the VW one from VWSpeed.co.uk about £90 I think. there's threads on here on how to remove your head unit. Simple job is about 40 mins.

The HK unit plugs in to the cd changer socket on the stock radio, you can run power from the back of the radio so no need to have cigarette lighter etc. Once fitted its just like part of the car. it all lights up blue too so fits well with the dash lights etc.

Forget the rest fit the best..... or at least fit what VW fit....

http://www.vwspeed.co.uk/volkswagen/vw-parts/Genuine_VW_Ipod_Link_Adapter-1345-0.html

Genuine VW Ipod Link Adapter allowing you to fit your Ipod into the Glovebox of most VW models with a factory headunit and CD button (Mk5 Golf headunits RCD300 & 500, Mk4 Golf MFD2 Sat Nav units as well as Beta and Gamma Headunits). When this device is connected you cannot also used a CD changer but with the storage capacity of an Ipod you'll have no need to. Is compatible with most Ipod models including the 20Gb, 30Gb, 40Gb, 60Gb, the Ipod Mini and Nano as well as the Ipod Photo models. It also charges the Ipod whilst it is connected to avoid running flat during playback.

However it will not work with First or Second generation Ipod models. You may need a terminal removal tool to assist with fitting this item as you do need to remove a wire from a connector to provide the earth for the adapter although a hair clip I'm informed is another readily available to hand item that can also be used.

I found the VW IPOD prep a rip off TBH.

Doesn't show track names, albums, genre, etc etc etc.

You can only use 5 playlists and when the track number hits 100 it says track 01 again.

A big disappointment, easily cured by going for an aftermarket set-up .....of ANY sort!!

I have this one as well. Is a doddle to fit, takes about 1 hr if your unsure and a set of trim tools.
