i am changing all the vac hoses to silicone ones, is it 3mm hose i need?, will 2metres be enough, also where can i get the little clips that hold them on
cheers
Scott
-
go on ebay and search 3mm ID vacuum hose - guy sells 3 meters for £12.99 delivered I think.
You don't need the connectors they just push on tight, 2 meters would do it, the longest goes up to the ECU, I can show you a pic if needed
-
cheers mate, so theres no chance of them comming loose, ebay here i come
-
no... they are quite a tight fit so are fine.....
-
cheers, got some today, can't get the scuttle panel off now  one of the screws is all chewed up the others just seem to turn but not unloosen
-
get some pliers and rip the things out when you've unscrewed them a bit, they won't break..
Make sure you replace all three vac hoses too
-
Hi Pete, i have changed one of them so far, will do the others tomorrow when i can get the panel off....is one of them only about 2.5"long? and connected onto a thin plastic pipe?
-
yeah and be really careful when taking it off of the crank case pressure control valve which is the black box coming off the manifold. I snapped the little nipple that the vac hose goes onto and VW wanted £60 for a new valve so I had to glue it back on which was fiddly and took me 3 goes to get it strong enough - think they jut go brittle over time..
this pic shows the two smaller one's, the 3rd goes from the throttle body upto the ECU - have fun getting the scuttle panel off

how many of the annoying have you got off so far? all I did was unscrew them for a bit then grab them with grips and violently tug and twist whilst pulling away and they just come out.... b*llsh!t design really.... you wait till your trying to get it back in place
-
managed to get the scuttle off......couldn't get the hose off the ecu and didn't want to force it incase it broke anything  so had to just put it back together and will try again later.
only thing now is the scuttle screws don't seem to tighten up, do you have to get new ones when you take it off
-
They won't tighten, as long as they hold the scuttle panel in place it'll be fine. The old vac hoses tend to go a bit crispy at the ECU end. The nipple the vac hose sits over is metal so it's safe to cut the old hose off with a stanley knife
-
cheers Pete, will give it ago tomorrow again
-
was looking at doing this as i have some spare hose lying around. 1st i wouldnt know which were vacuum and 2nd, i cant get my scuttle panel off and it is slightly broke from when i tried taking it off!
if you get it done, let me know how it looks.

as pete said you just unscrew the screws a bit then yank them out with a pair of grips.. i was real hard on them and they didn't break  it is an easy job now that i know i can just cut the ecu bit to get it off
-
job done and looks much better than the old stuff, hardest part was getting into the ecu one as is limited space...but well happy
-
for future reference there is a nut that holds the ECU casing down which you can undo and literally pull the ECU out and turn it round so you can see what your doing.
Has it made any improvements to the running of the car?
-
good tip as the ecu side is real akward to get into, i think it seems a bit smoother cause i noticed the ecu hose had perished quite badly. one question, does the lenth of the hose matter? i.e does it matter if the new one is slightly longer or slightly shorter than the old one? (i kept it the same size but just wondered)

not really a vacuum is a vacuum I suppose although if it went to far it might not work but you would have to go a long way for that to happen.
