Now, it's my 20th birthday tomorrow and I'm looking at getting a fair bit of moolah! About £1k or more! So I'm after a new car as I have been without for over a year now!!
But what do I choose :o My insurance is quite high as I have 3 points on my license :(
So it's really a tossup between a VW Caddy 1.9 SDi or a VW Golf 1.6 - what do you guys reccommend and why?
Thanks in advance!

*****EDIT, Which vehicles are you after.. as i presumed you meant old caddy and mk2 golfs in 1.6.. but thats a judgement with £1k to spend... it's prob wrong*****
i loved my mk2... but you'll get the usual carb problems (research this by using the search function in the mk2 section!)
as for the caddy.. thats a cool vehicle.. and think you can insure them as a commercial vehicle not as a car.. which may or may not be cheaper..
at the end of the day its your choice.. define exactly what you want each one to be like to buy if you were getting both then keep the look out for both, and get the one that matches your description best.
e.g specify a colour, max age, max mileage, and see how you get on!
Good luck.

Thanks for the input - I'm preferably after a black one - but a black caddy is hard to find! (No that's not racist ¬_¬)
And yeah it's cheaper ton insure the caddy as it's a diesel and commercial!
I'm after an older Caddy yes, and either mk2 or mk3!

yeh do you need a van??? if not i wouldnt bother getting one, you will only be able to get one passenger in a caddy unless you throw them in the back  i dont think that that would be a good idea

so is it an early caddy and a mk2 golf 1.6?

I don't really give a sh!t about the passengers tbh lol just thinking of a nice entertainment system in the back ;)
Either that or a matress for the ladies haha jokes!

Early caddy - either mk2 or 3, not fussed!

If you want cool and retro, go for a Mk2 or a caddy. If you want something less retro and possibly more modern comfort, go for a Mk3.
If you do want a Mk3, but don't want more than a 1.6, look for the late R reg 1.6 GL which got a new 1.6 100bhp engine (developed ready for the Mk4). There's a few around, but it may take some time to find. Should cost about a grand though.
I didn't think the early caddies were SDI?
Are you talking about Mk1 pick up style caddies?
Anyway, if you aren't bothered about passengers that's fine, but what's the point in putting audio in the load bay? Sure you could put a sub and amp in there, but there'd still be a bulkhead and glass between it and you and you would have to make the load bay water tight so your gear didn't get wet.

i'm a mk2 person over a mk3.. but thats just the boxy qualities that i love.
i'd go car over caddy for the purpose of ease of availablitiy :)
good luck with your search

I personally would go for the caddy, I just think their far cooler than most things, their far more rare as well, I'd love one... come to think of it, anyone got one they wanna get rid off?

Caddies are a bit more retro cool, and a non-GTI Mk3 can be a tad bland (I know, I've got one).
how about a Caddy in matt black, old skool 13inch rims and a GTD engine from a Mk2 ?

Buy a Scirocco, you know it makes sense.

I did it, I went for a MK3 in the end! See MK3 section for details :)
And DubFan - I'm with you on the old skool 13 inchers for a Caddy - there's a nice one on some website with some OZ turbos - looks the nuts!
