Title: GTI Mk4 oil problem.
Post by: PM1967 on 21 April 2008, 09:58
I seem to be going through a lot of oil, got serviced a few months back and had to put more in twice. No signs of the oil leaking or the car burning oil. Any ideas? Also got an O2 sensor which I had replaced but it keeps switching the car to lean mode, I can clear the fault with a hand held diagnostic checker but it happens more regularly as the oil level goes down.

could be a number of things - coilpacks, lambda sensors

what fault code does the scanner bring up??

what sort of journies are you doing?? if its short start and stop then it will use more oil than usual

Would this be the 2.0 gti by any chance? They're known to drink oil almost as fast as they do petrol. O2 sensor usually fixes it, can't think why yours hasn't.. unless you over-filled the oil slightly at some point and killed your CAT.

Drive about 50 miles a day. It is the 2.0 GTI. I had the lambda sensor changed but doesnt seemed to have fixed it. Theres a bit of imulsification on the oil cap but no obvious signs of the Gasket being away, car doesnt over heat, no excess smoke, no oil in the water etc...

You see, if someone asks a question, then along comes the bandwagon of use search

So, when someone does, the holy thread resurection bandwagon comes along.

Which is best? Which should they do?

One thing is reading old threads/adding creative content like a fix or something. Another is saying

Same problem here. I think it's just a thirsty b******
