Hi, as this is my first post, please be gentle .
I am looking at changing my current car (a Focus ST3) for something a little cheaper to run and doesn't cost £430 to tax, and thought that a MK5 Golf GTI would be ideal. So, i have found a late 2005 GTI , 3dr DSG in Diamond black, with SatNav, Zenons, centre arm rest, MFSW, highline and 18" Monza 2's (NO leather or cd changer though). Its done about 30k and is up for £16999 at a VW dealer, i do think it maybe overpriced, but what is the general consensus on both its spec and pricing?

The spec sounds nice! I honesly wouldnt be too fussed about the 6CD Changer or the Leather as they are both not really must haves. Its got a centre armrest which imo completes the interior of the golf and other additions such as nav, xenons, mfsw, highline and the 18" monza's which are alot nicer than the normal 17" monza's. Deffinatley like the spec but not to sure about the pricing...I think others may agree with me and try and get it down atleast another grand maybe? Oh and black...deffinatley one of my fav colours on the GTI

The Parker's website is a good indicator of prices. See:

I've done the initial search, you just need to select the year of the car.

seems about 1500 over priced!! i got mine about 7-8 months ago with no extras and 17k miles for 16,000pounds.
-
Compared with the prices at the dealers down here in London that sounds about right to me.
-
Doesnt sound too bad, maybe a little over - really depends if you want the extra's - Personally I would pay more for the 18's and Xenon's, in fact I did pay more to get what I wanted on the car and I am not dissapointed wishing I had this or that as mine's got the lot.
-
I paid £1300 less for similar aged car a DSG, with 8k less miles, leather, satnav, xenons.....privately though, I looked hard for one with a good spec, as I have to live with it for a while....I could have got a newer car (06) with bare spec and 31k miles for £14,995 but elected to pay a little more for my red beauty and all the toys.
It was on Pistonheads for £16250, its still there as a "sold on pistonheads" I dont think I paid way over the going rate, however equally I dont think I bagged a particular bargain either
Have a look on pistonheads..there are some good deals...but there are also some ridiculous prices too...see below... .....but DONT use this as a yardstick for judging the relative price of the one you are looking at...i merely do it to show you the range of prices out there. Good Luck.

Sounds like you did ok with it being private, dealer will always want a little more.

Price isn't too bad. If you can get £500-£1k off it's a good deal! I wouldn't worry about the leather, I find the cloth seats hold you in the seat better, plus the cloth is of a very high quality.

I bought my GTI from Tollbar Warwick 3 weeks ago, if you want a bargain:

I saw this GTI when I was up there. 05 plate, £14,450! It's immaculate.

Or this... as a bargain .... for some reason it says (04) in the title but its a 2006 car!
http://www.pistonheads.co.uk/sales/408454.htm
tempting? ..... just be careful though its a cat d repair...however...that I think means the minimum of damage...and if there are receipts and evidence proper work done, then it could be good.

As it's had a smash, and with those seats, it suggests it's been driven and thrashed around by a boy racer. Good price, but personally speaking, it's not a vehicle that would interest me.
-
agreed re the smash, but dont think it has been a Corsa Boy job,,.....but caveat emptor etc

Having bought and sold so many mk 5 GTi's in the past. That price is about spot on. all long as it has good service history, alloys in good Nick, then i would say yes, finding a very well spec'd car in a GTi is hard to find, then go for it, you could try getting tax and a tank of gas etc, but i doubt the dealer will budge much on that figure.

Nothing wrong with those seats, someone obvioulsy had money to burn ticking the Recaro option when new.
-
Thanks everyone, it would seem that the car is a little overpriced. I will visit the dealer in the morning, and see if they will budge on the price.
-
How do you know its been smashed?? :S
-
I've PM'd you about a deal.
-
I know it was smashed cos before I was buying mine, I contacted the seller...he admitted that it had been Cat D repaired...I said thanks but no thanks...having previously been bitten by a dodgy 3 series. Car ran perfectly, although 3k in the engine mounting broke! but thereafter the main problem was selling the car on.

Hi Mike, sorry i missed your post, thanks for the offer, but i have a car to p/ex which i have had no luck in selling privately.
Anyway, an update, the car i mentioned in my first post was sold before i got a chance to look at it, as were the next 2 cars i found locally.
Im getting a little pee'd off now, but the search will go on.
-
Well get in touch as the dealer I purchased the car from have said they'd help me facilitate a deal.
Basically if I find a buyer they'll buy it off me and sell to you taking your part ex and providing finance if required.
