Its normal to have a degree of oil in your airbox,  having to much oil in the car will cause this to get worse, also blocked breather pipes.  first i would take them all off and clean up up realy well.   Check your oil level as well.  Im sure there is other reasons as well i just cant think of them.

16vs do breathe heavily as they get older, invest in an oil catch tank :)

just found out I have the same problem.  had my 1192 16v diagnostically tested yesterday.  Oil in inlet pipes.  tech said it came from breather pipe.  Checked the oil level and it was only slightly above normal.  He said this is common in older cars and not to worry about it.  just give it a good clean and check the air filter now and again.

i've also got a leak from the distributor seal so In have oil film in my dizzy cap- he said this may cause a pressure drop problem and may be a cause of the oil in the breather pipes / air flow pipe -  check yours.

All is good now, cleaned it up and it sat ticking over at work for about 1&halfs hours then a little thrash absolutely sweet.

Although my new idle valve or so i believe doesnt do the job it did when i first put it on can the oil from the airbox contaminate this????

Right my isv when i first replaced it used to straight away go up to about 1,500 revs for a couple of seconds then settle straight away to 1,000 or just under and then stay there.

Then i had the oil mishap and it seem to have gone back to how it used to be ticking over lumpy, thats why i ask if ioil can somehow contaminate this

it is possible, give it a clean with petrol or white spirit and see if that makes any difference
