only had my GTi a month but sometimes i could sit for 2-3mins trying to engage reverse, but most times it goes in first time.
The sometimes first and 2nd wont go in, just seems like you hit a brick wall and it just wont go in, i normally double clutch it and it goes in ok then most the time.
Whats the issue here?
-
mines abit like this in my 1.4,
feels like when u put it in 2nd u hit a wall and then it slides in , why does it do that? is it somthing to do with the linkage? is it easy to fix?
-
do you ever get a clunk/crunch when you put it into 2nd while driving? It soulds like it could be s syncro but mabey a linkage? try a good oil change! that can work wonders.
-
Its just had a service mate.
It doesnt clunk/crunch at all, no noises can be heard what so ever, just sometimes refuses to engage these gears
-
wats it like wen cars not running.i had a simler prob with mine it was down to a worn linkage /or make sure theres nothing under the gear stick. my mate ad a lighter stuck in his no one could find the prob til he went to change the gear stick for a shortend one. and ther it was the green lighter. the lighter was not the prob for mine but the linkage was. other prob could be gearbox mount av gone causing it to drop back and putin weight on linkage or clucth and thrush bearin.but you normly get a crunchin sound as yours a'int makin such a sound i would go for the linkage.hope this helps
-
hi mate does it go into gear with the enigine off n the clutch pressed ok? if not its the clutch? not sure if the clutch sytem is hydrolic or not.if so you could try bleeding the clutch.check ur gear box oil level aswell. if all thats ok could b either the gear linkage or the gear box it self hope that helps
-
get the cables adjusted

reading some of these replys has set my mind at rest a little, when i asked a chap at the VW dealer when i was buying oil he reckoned the car had probably been driven hard in the past and its normally 1st and 2nd that take the most abuse................. makes sense but none of you guys think the gears are shagged?
Im not mechanical what so ever so it would have to go into my local garage for the mechanics to look at.
I think for now its ok, i do about 10miles a day and dont have much problem with 1st and 2nd, just when it DOES happen its a right pain thats all and i dont like forcing it in, but most times double clutching makes it go in.
-
now thats sounds clucth related. ie worn cable, they r not adjustable so you would av to replace it.or its the actual clucth and pressure plate. you r looking at round £190 fitted at garage.
-
ouch.
But if its on certain gears then wouldnt that mean its gear related? if it was clutch id be having a hard time selecting anything wouldnt i?
-
the higher gears always seem to go in easy. and lower gears and reverse r a pain.i dont know y that is think it got somthing to do with the rev. because you can change gear without using the clucth and by using the revs instead and higher gears go in easy then but first and second are quit hard . but im certain thats its not your box or gears for that matter. if its your box i will be shocked. hope i havent lost you
-
Recently i've been having a similar problem! When i downshift from 3rd to 2nd its a right pain and refuses to go in. Up the box is fine though! Uprated clutch yr ago.. No noise's etc.. Any ideas? I'll update as i work it out lol

mine still dose that after i changed the gearbox oil. just left it
-
id say its not the box.id say somthing to do with clucth or maybe worn linkage. dont get me wrong the mk3 box is weak but your getin wrong symtoms to be the box in my opinion. let us know wen u sort it of wat it was thanks

This happened in mine, first it started by being abit awkward to get in 2nd, then reverse then 1st..
I eneded up needing the gearbox rebuilt and fitted a new clutch at the same time but that was just because i thought i may aswell while it was all out!
Hope its not the same for you mate but i must say the gear change is perfection now

How much did that cost you?
-
£380 and that was at mates rates

im having the same with reverse, just keeps going straight in to 1st, no noises, crunches/clunks. can you adjust syncro?
mines a mk2 though!

Check your engine mountings are in perfect condition before doing anything to the gearbox! misalignment of the engine puts strain on the gear linkage, and can cause these symptoms...
