right, just washed the car, and its got those little tar dots on the alloys, i tried normal car soap, wd40, few others things. nothing took it off...
anyone recommend anything for cleaning the rims and getting this tar crap off!
-
Tar spots? Or brake dust blemishes? (sort of orange colour?)
-
Meguairs "Hot Rims" to clean the wheels, then Klasse all in one follwed by Klass Sealant should do the job. I had the same type of little spots in a few places, now gone!

sweeny: no, black tar!. not orange :-|
newgolf: three different products? lol... which one takes the sh!te off?

The Hots Rims to clean the brake dust off, the all in one to remove stubborn "stuck on " bits like stubborn tar, and the sealant to give a decent glaze and seal the wheels making the next time clean a hell of a lot easier. Brake dusts comes off really easily.
Give it a try and post some feedback

is the all in one a wax?

i use Meguiars wheel brightener to clean mine, spray it on and agitate with a brush, best thing is to not let it ingrain itself by doing them more often (im assuming there some brake dust too)

ps, this is a good product for Tar removal http://www.polishedbliss.co.uk/cgi-bin/ss000002.pl?SS=tardis&PR=-1&TB=A&SHOP=

It doesn't seal as well as the sealant, but does clean well. I see it as a clean and prep solution. The Klasse sealant really does a good job, making future cleaning a doddle! I use the sealant on top of waxing the car, as a final step. Easy on, easy off!

I was just going to suggest the Tardis in 182's link above :smug:
I found Autoglym Tar Remover quite good as well, but still hard work...best to use it warm in this cold weather
Some people swear by a just dab of petrol.
If I get any tar spots on my paintwork, I now use Autoglym SRP, followed by a fresh coat of wax.
-
Tardis as above and then old detailing clay on the tougher bits :) should bring them up well then I use Chemical guys wheel guard to protect them :)
-
i was thinking of buying both the Klasse stuff, AIO and seal?? hum

I stand by my advise, they work for me.

Autoglym bug and tar remover is decent. Megs hot rims should get it off if you let it soak too.

While on the 'clean wheels' theme, does anyone have any advice for the brake discs?
As soon as I've cleaned the car the discs turn orange. I once asked a guy on a Meguire's stand who said it's the wheel cleaner that turns them orange/rusty!??! Can't say I agree as it happens when it rains, plus I don't use wheel cleaner only soapy water and a microfibre wash mit.
Any suggestions would be welcome  as at the moment I have to take the car out to get rid of the rust, then re-clean the wheels..........
-
where can i get this Autosmart Tardis stuff which isnt 5L, little big for my use.

I dont think you can mate, on Detailingworld they sometimes do samples to send out in smaller bottles though

theres not alot you can do, as soon as water hits them they will rust, only option is to not get them wet (Very hard), or as soon as you have wet/ washed them go for a very very quick drive to dry them

Cheers Shaun, thought as much but you never know if someone has a trick up there sleeve or a new wonder product
-
Another tardis user here, its excellent for removing tar from not only your wheels but also your paintwork, it basically just wipes off. Just remember to re-wax afterwards.
It may seem like a big tub but you'll soon go through it.

you don't need to go for a long drive, a quick reverse and forwards with the brakes held on soon works - even easier if you've got DSG (or a choke!)

The Hots Rims to clean the brake dust off
Is this safe to use on 18" laquered monzas? I have ordered some but it smells quite harsh (like.. acidy) and not sure if I should use it or not :undecided:
-
well peolpe on DW are using it on everything.... if its ok on paint i wouldnt see why not... try it on the back of the wheel first?

he is talking hot rims though not tardis, i would be cautious with it, make sure its all off, and possibly water it down, the monzas are lacquered so will take a bit of abuse, but if theres cracks, scratches etc then the hot rims may sneak in
