Title: Castle Combe Performance Car Action Day
Post by: Paul86S2 on 20 April 2008, 16:26
Went to this on Saturday (yesterday) and had two sessions out on the track. Mk3 16v.

First session was at 9.15am and the track was very wet and slippery. The 3 cars in front of me all came off on the first lap which made me laugh, until on the second lap I did exactly the same with a trip across the grass going backwards. It was like a car park with cars on the grass after virtually every corner.
Second session at 11.45 am and the track had dried out so managed to get some reasonable speed around the track. Good fun and the new drilled discs, mintex extreme pads, and braided hoses all worked really well. There are some real bad drivers on these days, but also some really good ones and a good cross section of cars.
Mid day and the rain started again so the track was again very slippery with some spectacular sliding off. As far as I know there was no-one hurt and no serious damage to cars done. The bloke in a 2005 Ferrari was a brave man mixing it up with cars some of which had little or no value, he span off in front of us but he still did a few more sessions.
There was a few very well driven and fast Mk2 Golfs, didn't get to chat to the owners.

Off for a full airfield day on Friday at Hullavington.

Cheers

Paul

I didn't go out until 4:30, when it was streaming again.

The session I was on was the last one of the day - someone in a Mondeo ST24 span off (in front of me, as it happens) and they shut the track, which was bloody annoying.

As far as I can make out there were a lot of idiots out there - from people with 'show cars' who seemed to be out for a nice Sunday drive with their gran, to people in cars that were clearly tweaked right up, but who had no regard for the no overtaking zones.  I shan't be doing one of those days again - the 'closed door' sessions I've been on at Combe have been much better.

Yes the driving standards of some leave a lot to be desired. At last years Eurofest they had 40 plus cars on track at the same time!!!

Going around one corner I had a newish M3 trying to go round the outside and an Impreza trying to squeeze in on the inside. Made me laugh I had a £700 car and theirs were worth thousands. I don't know what part of no overtaking on the corners they don't understand.

This was one of the reasons I bought the Golf, I really didn't like tracking my porsche 928 on open door sessions.

Now I really don't mind and enjoy those days, but it is a third car and not worth much in the scheme of things, I definately wouldn't take my only car or pride and joy around on public open days.

Shame you had a wet and then cancelled session, but at least you escaped alive and unscathed.

Cheers

Are you on 928.org.uk?  I know a couple of the guys from there and went on one of the sessions at Combe organised by members last year.

Yes I'm on 928.org.uk and was at both 928 trackdays at Castle Combe last year as well.

Going again this year but probably going in the Golf for a change. I'll get thrashed on the straights but will be able to catch up a bit on the corners.

Cant beat Porsche engineering, rear wheel drive, 4700cc, and 310 bhp.
