Title: Interior lights - HELP
Post by: ineson on 18 April 2008, 21:04
My mrs has just bought a 96 golf cabriolet and some lights on the dash seem to have gone.

The main dials seem to only light up half way across the left hand side is dark so seem to think one or two bulbs have gone there.

Also the heater rings do not light up so wondered how many bulbs I need to replace there.

Can anyone point me in the direction of a quick how to and also where to get the bulbs from , apart fropm scrappies.

My heater ones were gone, so I changed the one central bulb for a drand new one, but inly really lights up the central ring, with the two other dials hardly visable, asnd the words "aircondition" isnt lit up at all,

which leads me to beleive there surely must be more than 1 behind there?

panel round the dials just clips off, use thin screwdriver.

theirs then a few screws which hold the surround in place, remove all these, think u will have to remove ashtray and theirs screws near that area too, the whole surroubd comes off 9dead easy to do)

then theirs 4 screws holding the heater controls in place, remove them and just tilt the unit forwards so u can get acces to the bulb holder

only 1 bulb as standard on all mk 3 models

dials vairy dependant on year, older ones has lots of bulbs, most for the warning lights etc like handbrake etc etc, lates ones use chip leds and only have a couple of user replaceable bulbs, these are for the indicator arrows and the 2 that light the face of the dials up, all years only have 2 that illuminate the dial faces, 10 min job at the most to change

hope this helps /makes sense

no problem matey

the heater dials dont light up very good in standard form anyhow just beware of that. the clocks are easy to do, you need to remove the headlight switch, do this by removing the panel to the right of it with a screwdriver, theirs a tab on the inner right side of the headlight switch, press this in and the whole switch will slide out, might be a bit stiff, leave the connector conected to it. theirs screws to remove the dials surround, take the scres out. theirs another screw to the left side of the dials too behind another plastic panel (to the right of the stereo) remove this with a screwdriver (just prize it off)
when u have removed the screws, the surround which goes around the dials will pull off, again this could be stiff as theirs some tabs on the top.

theirs then 2 screw that hold the clocks in palce. undo these and the dials will drop forward, undo the connector on the rear and take them out from car, the 2 bulbs are ont he top you will see them

Sorry to drag this topic up again, but I've just had a go of looking to see where the bulb holder for the heater dials is.

I have taken some pictures but I forgot to pack my phone-laptop cable, so will have to wait untill Wednesday to upload these.

So far, taken out ashtray and the heater dial cover.  Unscrewed the 6 screws that hold it all together.

This loosened the lower part which I could loosed and move out the way.

I also could take the dial part out, but only about and inch or so because the cables were holding it in.

I had a wee feel around for a bulb but couldn't see anything.

Anyone direct me to it??

Cheers
