i need some help my 91 8 valver has now coverd 200 thousand miles & is ready to
give up on me, i'v saved 3k to spend on her & i want to keep it stock so it
has to be a 2L 8 v so my question is where do i get the work done ,I live
in n,wales but i,m willing to travel any where top of my list so far is TSR so any
susgestions would be appreciated......cheers.

20v conversion, a good motorsport garage down here in cornwall offered me a basic instal including custom re-map at £3000 including engine!!!! also average donor lump milage is under 5,000. gotta be worth it in the end.
-
my sound daft but i want to keep it stock looking plus i should get a recon gear box for the price.
-
3K for a reconditioned g/box - where you buying it, Harrods?
If your not going to change / upgrade the engine - then what are you wanting to do exactly, suspension, brakes, exhaust? 3K is a lot for that.
-
Have you considered buying a whole new car? £3k should buy you a minter, or a G60, something like that?
-
Sometimes it better the devil you know ;)
-
Throwing 3K at a car that,s already done 200K to me, doesn't make sense! yes you can say "better the devil you know" and all that, but why buy just an engine, when you could buy a whole car, theirs plenty of mint cars out there, that fall into the 3/4k price bracket

You could buy 1/3 of an S2000 - definitely my choice.
-
I've got a really nice nearly standard VR highline you can have for 3k ;)
-
I say throw the money at the car you've got, we want to keep as many alive as possible don't we
Good for you Mon
-
i say buy a minter
3k is a hell of a lot of money to throw at something but won't actually get you all that much.
whereas if you buy a car you'd get a lot more
-
there was a decent Rallye @ Spring fest going for £3300

Yer but if i sell me VR I get 3k to throw at my MK2 ;)

HARRODS DON'T DO G/BOX 'S BUT IF THEY DID....
WOT I MENT WAS RECON BOX & ENGINE PUSHING OUT 150 BHP.
-
if the shell is minty mint and you love the car then go for it, u might actually struggle to spend that on a mk2! have you considered a full respray?
-
YE THE BODY IS SOUND NO RUST SO IT SEEMS A SHAME TO BREAK THE CAR
& I GET A SMILE DRIVING MY GOLF SO I'LL NEED TO GET IT SORTED SOONER RATHER THAN LATER.
-
I don't get this.
You want to keep it as standard as possible, but want a 20.l or something pushing out around 150 bhp? :undecided:
IMO I'd only spend that sort of wedge one go if I was going for some serious power like a 20v conversion. You can always keep the car stock looking from the outside and up to date underneath - then it'll also retain the kind of money you're putting into it.
Unless you're going to do a full restoration for a concourse car I'd say it just wasn't worth it.
-
garge near me quoted £500 at the most to put a mk3 2.0 16v in my mk2 os with brakes and a couple of other bits thats about a grand, so i say spend that then spend the rest on the lash!!
-
£500 is what i'v been quoted to in-stall plus another £1700 for a 2litr & pollished ,gas flowd head
then another 450 for a recon g-box ,i'ts a lot of money to spend on a car that cost me £800
but if it keeps it on the road for another 18 years it's money well spent in my books.
-
...how do I un-subscribe from this thread - its annoying me. It seems absolutely insane to spent nearly £2500 on an outdated, slow engine - when you could upgrade to a more reliable, more powerful 1.8T for the same money.
Is the going rate really £500 to install an engine? I did mine in a few hours on my own....**goes off to start engine installation business**
-
they said between £350 and £500 and as im a plank and would prob put the engine in back to front i'd rather pay someone to do it, and ive still got to get the kitchen, bathroom and nursery sorted so days of faffing about under the bonnet wouldn't go down to well the with the missus!

can no one else understand this guy? i can! why not sort his motor out! if he wants to spend 3 gs on a car, let him! vw built the mk2 golf gti to have 115bhp and do what it does very vell. i think they are the best cars i have ever driven. im not against modding them i think there are some really mint cars out there but i just love everything about the mk2 in its standard form and i think mon does too.
there is a company called tes advertising in golf plus magazine selling rebuilt 1.8 8v engines for £599 exchange. get one of these from a company like this, then some new heavy duty engine mounts, new stainless system, k&n induction kit and maybe a warmish cam, get the car set up properly by a good firm,
get the whole car polybushed and spend the rest on stuff like konis? rallye recaros?
the point im trying to make is that you say your engine is on its way out, it a 200k car so it could be making only 80 bhp for all you know. if you get a basic engine and mod it slightly you will be looking at around 130 break at least and you will still be keeping your car orignal.
if you do something like a 20vt conversion though you will be doing just that and nothing else, and the car will need a brake upgrade at least if you do this conversion.
where as if you stick with the 8v i bet you could be pushing 130 bhp on £2000 and then spend the rest on a brake upgrade stainless system? wheels? the list is endless!
godd luck with whatever you do though matey

Buy this and still have change!

And you will probably get your money back if not more, when the time comes to sell it!
-
^ I doubt it, as it's a five door.
£3k should get you a near mint valver.
or for less money, install a 2.0 16v ABF code engine from a Mk3 Golf amongst other VAG cars.
