Title: Headliner now in pics
Post by: Vdubbster on 17 April 2008, 19:32
So I attempted to re-trim my headliner last month. It went bad

I have just got hold of another headliner and pillars so the fun has started again

First I have pulled the old stuff off

(http://img376.imageshack.us/img376/4825/15700225to3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Then got wire brush to take off the foam

(http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/4984/36286035fp9.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Expanding foam in the handle recesses, messy stuff

(http://img175.imageshack.us/img175/4427/69456897pt3.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Sawed the foam down and used filler to get them all flush, used the filler to repair some small dents and weaker patches of the liner

(http://img252.imageshack.us/img252/4153/96838725au2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Done this in satin black

(http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/622/95140283xm0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

This time round I am going to use a brush-on adhesive glue, cant be arsed with spray stuff.

Im thinking of using acoustic carpet as its stretchy and thick, so glue shouldnt seep through, what you reckon?

i finally done my lining, started to sag a little but htats cos i ran out of glue and rushed it. i like your idea of deleting the grab handles, should make it easier to cover with no tricky corners to do now. i like wot you did with switch, i've left mine grey for now along with the sunroof piping. just taking ages because i have no time.

nah mate, you will have to pull it out... covering it isnt hard if you get the right material...

i've sprayed my sunroof slide cover, sun visors and grab handles (wish i'd thought to delete mine tho)  but covered the lining in suede. I took all pillars plastic out and wrapped those in suede too. run out of material and need to get some more to finish rear panels.

The screws that hold on the grab handles are one of the main things that hold the lining to the roof, could give you some issues there

I was thinking this also, Im hoping all the rear pillars will do enough to hold it all up. The sunfroof will hold the front, just the rear.

Early passats have black grabs which will fit, and the cabrio has black visors also

Done the sunroof cover, used acoustic carpet and paint on adhesive. the thick carpet don't let any glue through

Just the bloody headliner now

Ok, its done, THANK CUFK FOR THAT

Acoustic was from ebay, everywhere else seemed to do 1X2 meters, I got 1.4 X 3M for £25.

The glue I went for in the end was evo Stick Adhesive from Wilkinson's, this stuff is perfect, brushed it on both the headliner and carpet, left it for about 10 - 15 minutes then pushed them both together.
This carpet is wicked, It gave me no problems with creasing, so easy to lay as long as you let the glue set. This is the most important thing!

Its took a while as I did a section at a time.

Here some pics now done, just needs fitting.

(http://img115.imageshack.us/img115/8412/57506079zk2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Here where the visors go I had to be careful and take my time, managed to get the carpet stretched in all recesses nearly perfectly. The glue needs to be tacky here before applying carpet.

(http://img395.imageshack.us/img395/7156/49503421pm0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Used super glue to tidy up the rear, super glue does soak through so had to be careful.

Il get some pics up once its in the car

Looks like you've done a good job there mate!

I used evo contact when I was recarpeting Beetles, great stuff & as you say needs to be left to go tacky before you push surfaces together!

Interested to see what it looks like all fitted up!

Not done visors yet, how do yours look?

And what did you do with that rubber around the sunroof?
Title: Re: Headliner NOW DONE :-)
Post by: nelds on 28 April 2008, 22:36
i'll try and get some pictures of my visors. they look ok apart from it's rubbed off the bit that clips in, i might put black tape over that part. the trim around sunroof is still grey, i started to remove it then changed my mind. doesnt look to bad being grey cos i still have grey sunroof switches

Ok,
The rubber around the sunroof was sprayed with matt black, it took ages to dry. I put it back on the car and used a clothes line to fit the headliner back in (you know the method to fit windows with older seals, like mk2 golfs have?) This carpet is thick so the sunroof requires a litle more force, however the electric sunroof still moves it fine,

These trims are all gloss black, I have another set though ready for painting matt black to match the original black trim. Gloss looks CR*P

The headliner was SO annoying to fit, you need at least two people. I put it through the boot and used the rear trim panel to hold it in place at the rear, GF was holding it up from the front while i used the clothes line to fit the sunroof rubber. This entire job needs lots of time, so allow for it.

In relation to the handles, its holding up fine. the sunroof holds the front half up great, the rear is ok, however I think it may be worth fitting the rear handles to be sure. acoustic carpet should be able to fit in the handle recesses without creasing!!
If you dont have a sunroof you should USE your grab handles!

when you put the carpet on the headliner, take your time and do it in stages! if you use the impact adhesive as i did get plenty on the headliner and a little on the back of the carpet AND ALLOW IT TO GO TACKY!

Ebay seller - wercarmats he supplied me 1.4 X 2.5 meters of this stuff for £25 delivered, came the following day A*

Nelds, you could use that suede on the sunroof so your panels match + the sunroof will move more freely :-)

stupid friggin job !!......the suede on my headlining is sagging, the hot weather has fooked the glue and the material has come away. looks like i'll be getting the acoustic carpet after all !

Just make sure you cover 100% of the headliner and allow it to tack. Be generous with the adhesive too

which trims you onabout?

just a quick one, i actually removed and re fitted my headliner alone, so it can be done

Yes I need cabrio visors.

The sunroof trim is a joke, I sprayed mine with Matt black but as you can see it looks gloss
