Ok this is not probably the best place to ask this, apologies in advance!
I have seen people using an attachment that makes loads of soap suds when cleaning thier GTI on some forums. Any recommendations to which type, what liquid to use and where from? I have a mains water hose and a Hozelock snap fit end on it. Sounds a lot simpler than carrying buckets in and out of the kitchen getting the floor all muddy lol :smug:

your probably talking about the Gilmore with supersnow foam http://www.autobritedirect.co.uk/shop/product_info.php?products_id=1830
ps, imo you will still need a bucket though (2 in fact)

Perfect, thanks 182_blue, looks like that'll do me!
Nice one

read the bit i adeed about buckets, that said half the thing with it is the fun factor, in fact i defy you not to giggle your tits of the first time you try it
-
I always do the "2 bucket" thing making sure I have no grit in my lambswool mitts, I dont want any swirls or scratches. It does look like fun!

it is, you will also be looking to see if the neighbours are watching (slightly embarrassed LOL)
this is my gilmour, there are better units but they require a pressure washer

That looks a right fun tool!
My neighbours tend to copy what I do, my cars always gleaming and they come over to aks what I use etc. When I paint the house, clean the windows, mow the lawn, they always seem to do the same the next day...
The wife and I have a good laugh about it most bank holidays. I'll get one and see how long it takes before I'm asked to lend it out or give details where to get one lol! :smug:

this is the machine version

Get a tub of Autoglym, a lambswool mit and some elbow grease. That's how real men wash cars
-
I would let anything Autoglym near my car unless I wanted white marks all over the rubber parts and a second rate finish...
Far better stuff out there, like Meguiars, believe me I have a shed full of most products and the Autoglym ones are gathering dust..
Have you ever tried gold class shampoo? NXT2 tech wax?
-
Autoglym really that bad?? I got lots of their stuff when I first got my car... not really used it much tbh. i was under the impression that autoglym was used by all the top car companies :lipsrsealed: wonder where I got that idea from
-
Megs all the way
The NXT Sray Polish works really good and of course. Megs Rim, Caliper and arch cleaner is pretty awesome too.
I quite like Megs Gold Class. Works miracles. I have images of a car that I detailed that was never baked at the factory. Swirl heaven and so soft... The paint started rubbing off  A full detail with Megs and the car was perfect and so shiny.
P.S-The car was a Peugeot 206. See what I mean by miracles

I have tried many products, and AG really aren't up to standard IMO. Dealers sell you Lifeshine for around £300 but you can get the packs on eBay for a LOT less than that, here's one example at £39.99
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUTOGLYM-LIFESHINE-PDI-CAR-VEHCILE-VALETING-POLISH-KIT_W0QQitemZ320239442082QQihZ011QQcategoryZ72201QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
I mainly use
Hot Rims wheel cleaner, wont burn your calipers or stain your drive like AG Wheel Cleaner. Doesn't strip the wax off your wheels either
Meguairs Gold Class Shampoo
Quik Detailer + Clay Bar 1 a year
3 Step paint cleanser, but once every year or so after claying with a Porter Cable 7424. Paint Cleanser then polish only, miss the carnuba step.
NXT 2.0 Tech Wax
P21S Carnuba Wax
Klass High Gloss sealant
Endurance tyre shine gloss.
Vinyl and rubber cleaner
Car shines!
The only thing AG i use is the glass cleaner, its quite good at getting tough stains off glass, like water drop stains that won't go away. Dont get it on the rubber as it dries like chalk and its a begger to get off.

08micsta is absolutely spot on. I fully agree.
NXT 2.0 is great on dark coloured cars, they look "wet"
-
Yes. I forgot to mention that. NXT is probably the easiest polish around. Sray on. Leave for five minutes and you dont even need a PC etc to get that shine. Just a soft cloth does wonders (Microfibre cloth).
The stores here dont seem to stock the liquid anymore. Only the spray on version. What would you all suggest to use as a polish/wax for a machine polisher/ PC?
I am planning on buying one soon and may be detailing a few Lambo's, Aston Martins or Porsches soon so advice would be great.
Please dont send me to Detailing World.... Them members there scare me
-
Jeeez i didnt realise cleaning a car was so complicated. Its usually down the hand car wash for me!! It ALWAYS rains the day i wash my car... so i just stopped bothering :embarassed:
-
lol. I made the mistake of visiting Detailing world and I came back changed. I did a mini photo Shoot of a Porsche 911 carrera today and all I saw was swirls until I got to the point where I told the owner it needed to be fixed. **Edit. Shortly before handing my card over**
There is so much more you can do to a car. I received an email earlier from some rich guy with a midnight blue Aston Martin wanting it detailed. i almost said yes until he told me its three years old... And has only ever been cleaning by a car wash machine
I rightfully turned him down. :lipsrsealed:
Maybe we should have a sticky section for car cleaning? Detailing. etc?Or does this stuff fall under the maintanence section?

I'm no expert by any means, just an "enthusiast", if anyone spots any mistakes feel free to advise.
As a good place to start, the 3 step Meguiars product does quite a good job, along with either a Porter Cable 7424, or the new Meguiars G220. The Porter Cable is American so you will need a 240/110V transformer, the heavy yellow things found on most building sites. You will need to change the plug from a US to UK 110V 3 pin, about £1 at most electrical stores.
The G220 is a new UK product, I haven't seen or used one yet, but I can imagine it does a decent job, as their products are top notch and well priced compared to Zymol, Swissol etc.
Start with a clay bar and quik detailer, your paint will be as smooth as glass. All the instructions are on their website
http://www.meguiars.co.uk/
You will ache after 8 hours using a Porter Cable, but your paintwork will look better than most cars in a VW showroom :smug:

Hi Sixpot,
That looks like the sorta suds I want to get the job done! I already have a Karcher pressure cleaner, can you advise on what else I'd need?
Welcome, by the way
Lets see a pic of the GTI after you've finished !
-
Autoglym really that bad??
No, that other guy is talking nonsense from my experience.
He must have been using some fake knocked off stuff. Sorry to sound so dismissive, but I've never ever experienced "white marks all over the rubber parts and a second rate finish". Ever.
-
tbh i know the polish does leave white marks on any black plastic bits... but i thought that your just supposed to clean the black bits last???

Who would make fake Autoglym products?
Well a VW dealership sold it to me along with the "Lifeshine" product.
Its only my opinion after trying both products, have you tried both and compared results? :smug:

If you already have a Karcher pressure washer, you just need an Auto-rae/Autobrite Foam Lance :

A bit of Snow Foam also helps in the shampoo. Here's what I use (It's not the HD version as in E-bay link) :

Not a detailing thread I come here to get away from it! The lances and snowfoam are great to get the worst of the dirt off the car before touching it to wash. I usually rinse cold, then snowfoam, hyperwash and a dash of citrus wash. I add Tardis traffic film remover if it is bad with tar or I'm rewaxing. Let it sit for 5 mins and then rinse off.
When I have rinsed it I wash with 2 buckets and a microfibre mitt, old one for the wheels and bottom of doors etc. Then dry with a bit of meguiars last touch and a monster fluffy microfibre drying cloth. I find this is a really good wash before you start polishing and waxing.
Autoglym SRP is actually a very good product if used correctly 3-4 coats of SRP will fill many smaller swirls and give a good base for a tasty wax like Dodo Juice or Collinite etc. :)

No, and that has no baring on the point you made. I haven't experienced "white marks all over the rubber parts and a second rate finish" with Autoglym. I know there are better products on the market, but in all the time I've used Autoglym I simply haven't experienced what you have described. I've always been very, very pleased with it. I think we are talking about different things anyway, I'm talking about the Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner rather than Autoglym polish

Ok well you are only using one product, the shampoo conditioner! I have used that in the past and it is "ok". White bottle green writing right? You wouldn't experiance the chalky marks unless you'd used the paint restorer or SRP/UDS products.
I have the full range of AG and the SRP and Ultra Deep Shine DO leave white chalky residue over any vinyl or rubber parts which are a right pain to get off. From reading up about their range, they use chalk fillers to colour the liquids which dry and cause a problem.
Meguairs range is a far better product, try their gold class shampoo, nxt tech wax, hot wheels wheel cleaner, and then tell me you still prefer AG
I'll be more specific next time for you Steve78

I certainly will give it a crack as I have nothing to lose. Might be a while though, only just bought a new 2.5 litre of the AG stuff last week...
-
Guys.
Dont wanna sound silly.... But you do realise you are not meant to polish the black plastics on a car? Use a seperate product rather and get a better result. Tape all plastic bits up. use the Autoglym, Megs etc and you wont have a problem....
Mike
-
I dont bother to get all taped up, and if a bit of megs does get on the rubber, it just rubs off. AG stains it with a white powder and is a beggar to get off.
I treat my rubber afterwards with megs trim detailer.

You wouldnt have this problem with your plastic bits were painted
Look much better as well

Good point, does it look better on a BMP with the trim and bumper painted? Thats got me thinking about a paint job...

Black Magic Pearl - is that the same as black diamond pearl?

Black Magic Pearl - is that the same as black diamond pearl?
I suppose it is lol!

VW use different marketing names for colours and even some parts, depending on region. No idea why though!
E.g. here in Ireland...
Steel Grey = "United grey"
Diamond black = black magic
Monzas = detroits

Whats wrong with turtlewax?
-
"Whats wrong with turtlewax?"
I'm not into animal cruelty in any way. I cant imagine how you could get wax from a turtle, nor how many it would take to fill a jar ?
