Good work, and it looks fantastic. Was taking the trim off easy or did you have any scary moments with the plastic?

You certainly deserve the drink, but make sure that cat doesn't knock it over

I'm still looking for the RCD510.

Did you already have a sat-nav aerial? If not where did you locate the aerial??

it was quite easy tbh, took just above 30 mins all in, i pulled at trim whilst using proper trim tools to help move the clipped bits, quietly confident i could do it all again

Nice - can't believe it was that quick to install.  Whats about phone prep - have you got that working too (notice you have MFSW) - if I went down this route I would also want this?

Another question - does your cat do anything apart from mince around the house and try to get in on all the photos

I installed mine the other week, now I need some ideas on what tunes to fill the 30GB disk with.  Any appropriate GTI driving music suggestions appreciated.

Was this a simple plug and play install. I'm sure I read something about having to change the aerial connectors (round to square connector ?) and maybe some other wiring loom tweeks.

I've got the MFD2 factory fitted with Highline and MFSW options but am seriously considering upgrading to an RNS510 and the factory bluetooth kit.

all i had to do is swop one cable for my ipod prep (just poped out of one slot into another), this would also apply if you had an external 6 disc changer, and then i just removed the Fakra cases (you do this by removing a clip on  the side , or by removing a star washer inside the fakra case on  from the ends of my two ariels cables and thats it, very easy, as i say it took me only 30 mins all in
Title: Re: Sat nav installed :-)
Post by: 182_blue on 17 April 2008, 12:43

here are the two ariels , one with fakra on, and one removed

note, if you dont have this clip on the side (red one), then you have star washers that need popping off instead

When you use the VW configurator, why does it say you cant have the iPod/armrest when you choose the RCD500 or any Sat nav's? the only one it lets you choose is the RCD300, after that it pops up with a warning asking you to remove the iPod. Even the dealer told me it wouldn't work unless I chose the 300. By the sound of things, the standard iPod/armrest will fit into any of the units?

I may make a visit to the dealer this afternoon if this is the case lol!

mostly because they cant be arsed LOL, i guess if you get the 500 it supports mp3 so they figure you wont want ipod, same for the nav unit ,but all the connectors are on the rns510 to accept them all, you cant order soundpack with the nav either, but mine works fine and all is there to accept it

I am curious. I have seen two styles of Satnav on the t'internet. One has the Phone/Media/..etc buttons at the botom of the screen and the other has the phone/media buttons on either side of the screen. Can anyone tell me the difference between the two units?
Example 1
(http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/images/front_picture_library_UK/dir_414/car_photo_207451_7.jpg)
Example 2

Example 1 is the older model (MFD2), its doesnt have hardrive, needs disc in for nav, no sd slot etc

example 2 is latest model (mfd3 RNS510) with 30gb hardrive, sd slot, no need for nav disc as its on hardrive, touchscreen + loads of other bits :-)
