Hello!
Im new to the forum so thought I best say hi...
I am currently in the market for a new car and have stumbled across the Golf GTI Turbo.
Basically I have been trying to find a circa 200BHP car that isnt newer than March 2001 (to avoid the increase in tax) to replace my little Corsa B 2.0XE.
I had looked at the 4Motion but insurance and running costs will be a little high. I have since been made aware that the Golf GTI Turbo is tuneable to over 200BHP...so I'm now on the lookout!
I got an insurance quote for a Golf with loads of mods declared and it comes in cheaper than a standard 4Motion.
I will have some questions, but I'll post them elsewhere...

Hello and welcome!
In terms of the 1.8 turbo, there was different engine codes through the years, starting with the AGU, which yours will probably be IIRC. To cut a long story short, as the engine codes progressed, better components were used, so the later cars can achieve better BHP results, so in other words an AGU engine will be getting near its maximum at 200 bhp (unless you do some physical modifications, e.g. air intakes, turbo work etc).
I'm no expert, so have a look through the Mk4 section for helpful threads. Good luck!
PS... If it was me I would be more interested in the quality of the remap, e.g. torque curves etc. rather than max BHP.

Ah yes, engine codes!
Spent all afternoon getting to grips with those yesterday. The other thing i will look out for is a 2000 model with a KO3s turbo fitted. They are about...
It seems that Custom Codes are highly praised on here...if i do buy a standard Golf that may be the way I go. Ideally after one with work already done though, save me a few quid!
Cheers for the warm welcome guys...
