Title: Car at dealers: So far so good.
Post by: makzimum on 15 April 2008, 10:34
Dropped my car off at the dealers about 2 hours ago for a service and it's first MOT.

Seeing as it now only has 5 days left on it's warranty I thought I'd see if I could get a few little things sorted before it expires.  Firstly, two of my wheel centre caps were getting white corrosion under the lacquer - similar to the Monza white worms, so I thought I'd see if they could be replaced.  Also, the finish on the plastic spokes on my steering wheel were chipping/peeling a bit so again, wondered if this was covered.

So... got a call 5 min ago and I get 4 new centre caps and a new steering wheel.  And the car failed it's MOT for a constant velocity something-or-other, but again a warranty fix.  Very pleased I took it in this week rather than next!

I've now been wondering about the possibility of the dealer replacing my standard steering wheel for a MFSW, seeing as they are changing it anyway.  Anyone know the relative difference in cost of the parts?  And whether anything else needs to be done/added to retrofit it?

I can't answer your question, but if it's possible to get the MFSW then do it!  I don't know about anyone else, but I find it essential!

Steering Control module? Highline Computer? (to get all the functions working?)..sure theres retrofit posts on here for mfsw and probably part numbers....bet the dealer says, can only do a like for like replacement or some other crapola.

Wonder why you need a new steering wheel anyway.

Yeah, looks like there are too many complications to retro-fit easily, although I have found some articles on how to do it.

I agree, new steering wheel seems a bit over the top but I'm not complaining!

Have you asked your dealer to quote retrofit of the mfsw and would they give an allowance towards the total costs? i think others (without checking back) have been charged in the region of £320? for retrofit of the mfsw.

MFSW not simple but any competent VW dealer should be able to do it.
