Title: RCD Removal tool, trim tools required!
Post by: NewGolf on 12 April 2008, 09:41
Does anyone know which tools I need to buy to remove the RCD300, and where to get them from online?

Also a plastic type of trim removal tool would be good so I wouldn't have to use a knife and risk damaging any interior parts. And cutting myself. It hurts.

I have the RCD300, i think you need 4 slot in tools to get it out?

I swapped my RCD300 over for an Alpine single DIN stereo.
All I needed was 1 torx driver (I think it was a T10?) and I used an Apple tool for working on laptops for removing the trim carefully.
Simple enough job - just time consuming.

Obviously I had a VW fascia adapter too, to convert to single DIN... with a storage pocket.

I think they are for the older type, I just had a look and cant see any slots. I think p3eps is right and I only need a trim tool and 1 torx screwdriver.
I like the sound of an apple tool though, sounds useful! You have to have all the tools to do a good job, its heartbreaking to damage your trim on a new car and have to look at it everyday...

Appreciate the help guys.

Yikes! let me know how you get on, with any hints/tips!

I read that you should let the car get warm to make the plastic less likely to snap....

I've removed the nav/radio about 4 times, nothing snapped on my sofar. Only thing that came loose were the small metal clips attaching the fascia surround, these can easiliy be glued back on. I would advise care when putting the center exhaust piece back in, there are a few small tabs which have to be inserted right or it will not fit, and using force at that point will snap these tabs.
If it's cold outside, i do drive around for a few minuts with heater on hi and all the air exhausting trough the center vents to get the plastic more flexible.

Just don't be afraid to use a bit of force...

The way I did it was the same as Merlinman's link - apart from I had a bit of re-wiring when I got it out to fit my non VW stereo in.

Just make sure you either DONT disconnect the passanger airbag light 'OR' DO disconnect the battery before you start... otherwise you'll get an airbag warning on your dash that your stealer will have to reset.

Just take care and don't FORCE any parts otherwise there's a risk of snapping stuff.  I've had mine off 4 times to fit a stereo, a Roadpilot, a Bluetooth Hands Free, and then again to fit a GPS aerial.  No problem at all... just take your time!!!

are you saying disconnect the battery if you do want to disconnect the light ?, or just disconnect battery anyway

ps, how did you remove the top grill bit (top air vent), just pop it upwards from the edges ?

Yeah... if you want to unplug the light then disconnect your battery.  I did it without disconnecting either - its easy enough.  You just turn the bit with the light in it upside down ontop of the dash, and make sure your parked on flat ground

I used to be an Apple computer engineer and still had a couple of the tools left.  The trim removal tool is essentially a plastic flat headed screwdriver - which you can use to prize things apart without leaving scuff marks that a normal metal screwdriver would.

The grill bit is removed by taking the torx screw in the 4th pic out, and then gently pushing something in round the edges of it to pop it out.  You can see in the 6th pic that it has about 9 plastic tabs that hold it in place.

that torx screw bit in pic 4 suprised me as it doesnt appear to be attached to the top part ?, and in this guide http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=2945481  they dont remove the screw first before removing it

Would I be able to reset the warning using Vag-Com? I invested in Vag Com, it came from the US in 2 days, to the Channel Islands! I have already tweaked many settings on my GTI, its easy peasy!
The doors lock as I drive off, automatically, one key press unlocks all the doors, and when I remove the key from the ignition, all doors unlock. I can also use tourist mode for the lights when touring the continent, without having to pay the dealership for 5 mins work.

Yeah - you can probably reset it with the VagCom - but its pretty simple just to avoid unplugging the light!
You can set most of those things using the Highline display.

Ok... maybe you don't need to undo that screw to take that part off.  I haven't dissassembled mine for about 5 months now, so my memory aint that great!  I also had my whole glove box out to fit a radar sensor under my grill (to get the cable from the engine into the cabin) and my whole centre armrest out to fit my ipod under the armrest!  Fun times

Ok I got the Micro Can from Ross Tech, with the pound to the dollar rate it was well worth it!
The one I chose is here

http://www.ross-tech.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=VCuCAN&Category_Code=VAGCOM

It really is straightforward to use, and you can change quite a lot. If you lived in the Channel Islands you'd be more than welcome to use mine!

The software you can download for free, its activated when you plug the correct cable in. I am well pleased with it, especially as I can do my own tweaks and fault clearing.

Dont pay any duty/Vat in the Channel Islands!!!
