Its a 3 door Clipper. So Ive got a few questions for you....
1) It has a '16v kr' engine in it, is that a GTI engine and is it good?
2) It has been converted to a 5 stud, is that a worthwhile conversion and can you get decent looking 5 stud wheels on a MK1?
3) it has no seats, headlights or stearing wheel and has a good vinyl roof and apart from a few scabs has not rust or rot underneath. It also needs a new fuel pump. The guy wants £400 for it what do you guys recon? I dont have any info on how many miles its done at the moment.
Thanks in advance!

Ah ha is the 16v kr engine from a mk2 by any chance?
-
if its a 16v kr its a good base, is the engine running and complete, is he using an aftermarket ecu or got a decent stainless exhaust manifold as the 16v conversions require a different manifold.
the 5 stud conversion on the rear is easy, just change to 5 stud drums i think but not sure what they have done for the front, may have used a 5 stud stub axle or used completely different hubs
im guessing no tax and mot but people normally ask 250-400 for the 16v engine alone with the appropriate stainless steel manifold so if you get a cabby for free you cant complain
haggle your arse off tho mate some people might tell you to f**k off but still at least you've tested the water, but if it looks like a good project get it and get stuck in fella :D
seats/headlights you can get cheap, might be looking at a fair whack to get a set of proper mint original cab seats or a leather setup tho, if interior has been stripped out you could end up spending a small fortune on the little bits to make it complete
are you looking for a long term project, resto or just a cheap daily?

Just spoke to the fella again and hes said that he doesn't know how the hubs were converted. He says it has a after market four branch manifold and the exhaust is upswept scorpion.
He also says it has a mk2 dash in it that has been chopped (this has put me off to be honest) and he said he would do it again because it doesnt look right. It has no door cards but has all the rest of the interior. Im pretty put off by the converted dash, I obviously wanted a MK1 and don't know if id be able to take it back to standard.
Think I might walk away now actualy
Oh and yes mate I am looking for a project but nothing that is going to require major overhauling because I dont have a drive or a garage
-
best walking away lad, you can get decent cabbys with tax and mot for sub 1000 pounds that will need small tlc and plus you have the bonus of being able to keep it legally on the road (if you get a car with no tax and keep it outside your gaff it might get towed)
-
is it the blue one of e38? it defo worth the punt! you can get a mk 1 dash fairly easy plus you can convert it back to four stud fairly easily! if you after 15 alloys then being 5 stud will be a problem as your bbs splits and oz turbos etc generally come in 4*100 pcd but then again you can pick up bbs splits oz turbos etc oin 5*100 pcd! the interior was sold from it mate plus the rally front end! he was only selling it for 1200 all together but you get to put your own stamp on the car so i think its worth it! and you know the shell good plus the car still has mot so techinally you can tax it! i think you should fella but hey if your not happy i would walk away!
-
Na I asked him and he said it had no mot. Ive found another one in black about 400 meters from where I live and its declared sorn so im going to go and see if the guy wants rid of it. It has a clipper kit on it and has carman badges on it. going to go round at some time tonight.
-
All Cabrios have Karman badges on....
and that's as much advice as I'm qualified to give!
Good luck anyhow.
-
Karmen the factory that made mk 1 golf cabriolets that why they are badge as karmen! they also made karman ghia mk 3 golfs and some corrado's not if all of them were made by karmen but my mum g60 had a karmen badge on it and my mk 3 cab has karman badges on the a pillars!

-
Hi lads thanks for the help so far you have been great. yea I would prefere a cab but id easily have a normal MK1.
www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk Never knew this existed so cheers for the link rusty
I clocked the one on volksone the other day but I would like a GTI. I know im probibly being too picky but id just regret it if I didnt get a GTI.
Cheers for all your help so far tho lads!
-
picky is how we should be.
decide exactly what you want and don't want before you start looking.
i knew i didnt want power steering
didn't want an electric hood.
i wanted elec windows
wanted it pretty muhc standard so there has been less messed about with,
mechanically ok with 6 months plus mot and some tax.
bodywork to be solid with possible few bits to repair but not pressing.
this basically meant that i was getting a runner as i needed it to replace my written off mk2. and only being able to run one car.
Decide what you want and keep looking til you find it as it is out there.
and don't forget anyprobs you have use the search function up top, as someone has already had the issue before you ;)
-
Thanks for all the info han. As I said when I spoke to you earlier I couldn't make you a offer on yours because of the fact that I don't have that much money to spend at the moment. What I need is a project so im not really that bothered if it isn't a runner just as long as it doesn't need too much engine work and I wont be driving it stait away so tax and mot is not essential. Basically I want to rescue a run down cab. I have a MK4 and a MK2 but the mk2 is going up for sale soon; that was a rescue job. Once I have got a MK1 and restored it I then want to use it as my daily driver (no matter how much the missus complaines!) and sell the MK4. Its not that long until most MK1's will not require road tax so I may be able to run both of them.
Anyways keep a eye out for us lads and ladies and hopefully ill get one soon!

http://www.golfmk1.co.uk/WhiteCab.htm that one is nice if I had 1500
http://www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=38791 like this one too, PM'd the guy see if he will take an offer

mmmmmmm, don't wait for that time as it will not happen until tax laws change. Free road tax is only available to cars that are registered before 1973, the 25 years free tax threshold was abolished years ago.
-
Oh right! ah well not to worry eh?
