Title: Mk3 clear lenses.
Post by: LostBok on 16 April 2004, 12:33
I'm after Mk3 headlight replacements with the Mk4 look lenses?

What are the recommended UK spec (RHD, not EU LHD) clear lenses?

I was thinking about Angel Eyes, but not seen any good quality UK spec Angel Eyes out there...

Need the full kit, so I can do the install myself.

Recommended retailers / prices?

Ok here u go

Smoked Mk4 look for the mk3 are only LHD at the moment, but I'm sure by the end of the year they'll be RHD too. If you want to risk it, try: -

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk/

Clear mk4 look are RHD and loasa places sell them, but I've heard people complaining cos the vision isnt too good to either side of the car, so poor when turning corners etc...

To buy them check these places

http://www.awesome-gti.co.uk

http://www.venommotorsport.com

http://www.eurocarparts.com/

The angel eyes headlights are also only LHD at the moment. But if you want to risk it, try: -

http://www.carismastyle.co.uk

If you want the Hella smoked twin headlight conversion which is distributed by VW and wont lose you your Internal headligt adjustment (if you have it) try: -

http://www.eurocarparts.com/

Or your VW dealership.

Thanks BlackGTI! Great info!

Has anybody on the forum ordered the Hella lights from EuroCarParts?

Are they these ones?
http://www.hella.com/produktion/HellaPortal/WebSite/Internet_uk/HellaLtd/Products/Light/Facelift_HL/Golf_III/Golf_III.jsp

I've got the GTI equivalent cabriolet: halfblack rear and side lenses, twin headlights, heated leather inside, heated mirrors, etc.... everything is GTi spec or above...  but sadly the 8V Gti, rather than the 16V Gti, so no traction control... but anyhooo.... yes, I have the electrical headlight adjustment and would prefer to keep that.

I am just looking for the "cleaner" Mk4 look I'd like it to look somewhere in the middle.... a Mk3.5 if you will.

Yes, me... but i got the smoked dual's.

They dont look too good if u dont have smoked fogs, indicators etc ... and ive seen em on a yellow Golf GTI and they looked horrid.

I dunno if the mk4 ones allow internal adjustment... but if u want a "cleaner" look, then u need the mk4 headlights...

If u want a bad-ass dark evil look, then upgrade ya fogs and indicators and get those Hella lights... will cost u around ?320 for the job to be done.

mk4 lights will set u back around ?140 and u wont need new fogs etc to make em look good...

your call...

PS: The mk4 look headlights on Euro Carparts ARE NOT manufacturered by Hella... they are made by "In-Pro".

I dont know anywhere that sell Hella mk4 style lights... but they'll cost alot more than those on Euro Carparts because their made by Hella.

btw this is my car, with the hella lights... as u can see they suit the darker coloured fogs and the darker paintwork. (Black)

Looks v mean, but just not my scene: I'm after the subtle semi-stock look...

The car has colourless fogs and indicators, I might go for smoked eventually, but happy just to change the headlights for now...

This is the cleaner Hella look I'm after:

Hella site won't show me their UK suppliers right now.... searching elsewhere.... even if I do find them, I'm still not sure Hella do the RHD version of the Mk4 lights??

Do any other manufacturers do similar Mk4 look lights where you can still use the internal beam control?

BlackGTI / n e body else.... have you ever seen the InPro lights in action?

Is the beam okay? Does the electric headlight adjustment still work with the InPro model?
Title: Re:Mk3 clear lenses.
Post by: Cupra Turbo on 19 April 2004, 15:52
I've heard people say the vision to either side of the car on the "in-pro" lights are poor ... its only got a good straight ahead beam.

So basically, poor on skinny backroads and when turning corners... but thats why their so cheap.

Oh and my HELLA are LHD/RHD ... u can adjust em .. so the mk4 ones might also be, this is why their so expensive i think.

If those Mk4 Hellas are indeed switchable to RHD, they definitely sound like they're the ones to go for... just have to try and find out where the hell I can get some!!

Okay, I THINK I've found the correct lights on the Hella website now that they've updated their site...

1LJ 008 758-011  Headlight  Dipped/driving-beam head- lamp, left-side traffic
Properties:  left, for left-hand traffic, H7
Information:  H7 headlamp, left, with clear cover lens and pre-fitted 12V bulbs

1LJ 008 758-021  Headlight  Dipped/driving-beam head- lamp, left-side traffic
Properties:  right, for left-hand traffic, H7
Information:  H7 headlamp, right, with clear cover lens and pre-fitted 12V bulbs

Although quite worryingly I did find these two model numbers on the website before they updated it!

1DJ 008 187-011
1DJ 008 187-021

Described as: "Volkswagen Golf III Main Headlamp with Golf IV Look
The headlamp upgrade for the Golf III as of model year 09/91 uses state-of-the-art engineering to offer a visually and technically attractive alternative to the standard headlamps.
These headlamps with modern look have eliminated the patterned cover lens. They allow a free view of the high-gloss, vapour-coated, free-form reflectors. These reflectors alone provide for the optimum light distribution. The dipped and main beams both have the highest performance H7 halogen bulbs available today.
The small round parking lamp is positioned between the two reflectors where it can be seen easily.
Installation of the headlamps is easy. These headlamps from Hella are OEM quality and approved for general use."

The only prob with the above is they don't describe wether the ights are for a LHD or RHD car....

Any ideas? I'm trying to get some responses from the Hella staff technical staff at present...

depends whether "for left-hand traffic" means for traffic passing on the left (bad / LHD) or for people that drive ON the left (good / RHD)

I was also struggling with understanding that translation...

My Hella instructions for my quads were odd

it said

"if traffic is on your right slide bolt this way" ---->

yet it was wrong... and shouldda been the other way around for RHD LMAO

hmmmm.... gets more confusing... I'm hoping for switchable ones....

BlackGTI - can you switch yours easillly?

i.e. if you're going across to France for a weekend, can you just pop the bonnet, slide two levers across and slam it shut again, or do you have to remove the whole lense/unit?

Cool, they've cleared most of that up then:

Quote

The 1DJ part numbers are  LHD, right hand traffic.  The UK spec 1LJ versions would be the ones you require (VW Golf III in a IV look).  The difference is the internal make-up, such as direction of the reflectors within, there may be other differences.  They cannot be converted. As these are an upgrade they are suitable for vehicles with or without headlamp levellers.  There is a lead with an adapter which needs to be ordered seperately for vehicles >12/92. 8KA 146 152-001 - in stock RRP ?26 1LJ 008 758-011 and 1LJ 008 758-021 are in stock RRP ?128 each.

A good Hella distributor relatively close to you is Euro Car Parts in Wembley and they may even have these in stock - tel: 020 8956 5003

Kind regards

By ">12/92" does she mean "greater than" December 1992 or "up to" December 1992??

u can switch em ... but not "that" easily.

U gotta remove ya grille, and take the headlights out to adjust em.

takes about 15mins to do both.

Mk4 look lights aren't switchable (as per note from Hella sales)....

Just make sure u get RHD then  ;)

1LJ 008 758-011 and 1LJ 008 758-021 are the RHD models RRP ?128 each all the newer Mk3's ones DON'T need the extra cable only the first year or so of production that do.

Demon Tweaks Direct will do them for ?127+VAT = ?298.45

There's a SMALL local retailer in Wimbledon SW18 that can get them in for ?125+VAT = ?293

Selling the old BMW this weekend, so I'll have the cash then.

Big hand to Black GTI!!!

He recommended http://www.gsfcarparts.com - just downloaded their catalogue and they have them: ?76.50 + VAT per side = ?179.78

Inc delivery that's ?189.12... just saved me ?110!!!

They actually have them in stock too, so might even pop around later today... when I called up their Heathrow branch I specifically asked "and are those the genuine Hella parts, not equivalents" to which the sales person replied, "yes, genuine Hella 'Mk4 look' headlamps for the Mk3 Golf".... shoul dhave recorded that one 'co sI'm sure they'll be equivalents - that's nearly HALF the Hella RRP! Everybody advertises Hella and then actually has In-Pro or something like that...

Missed them - not even with clear roads and green lights could I make it across there in 10 mins... might give them a try next Saturday then....

BUGGER!

Despite having a Hella logo at the top of that section (of three light) and having the photo of a Mk4 facelift STRAIGHT out of the Hella catalogue next to it, the GSF lights are apparently completely "unbranded".

White box, no logo's, no idea of performance, no thanks.

Looks like I will be paying the ?300 to make sure I get decent parts.... just not quite yet.

Post by: Cupra Turbo on 30 April 2004, 15:56
thats sucks mate! ... obviously their "Hella copies" ... people do Hella copies of the quad lights too .. but ya shouldnt brand em as HELLA ... they should be classed as "HELLA COPIES"
Title: Re:Mk3 clear lenses.
Post by: LostBok on 30 April 2004, 16:33
When I called their online sales, they said "yes, just had a look in the catalogue and they're definitely Hella".... specifically asked a few times to make sure they weren't rip-off's / InPro / FK /others and "yes, definitely Hella".

Then realised their Kingston branch is 5 mins around the corner, so I call ed them up. First off, I asked the guy the same questions and he said "looks like Hella, but need to order them across from another brach call me tomorrow and I'll check". Called him te next morning and he said "Sorry, completely unbranded".

If I'd ordered online I'd be stuck with unbranded lights that probably wouldn't support the adjustable beam height, would almost certainly have a bad beam pattern and knowing my luck would probably be LHD!
