Title: Not starting!
Post by: Mk2Kezza on 08 April 2008, 20:56
Right, nipped to tesco last night and when I jumped back in the car - nothing. It was like I hadn't put the key fob in the immobiliser. When I dont do that, the starter motor wont turn (immobilised). Anyway, wiggled things for an hour an a half and as the misses turned up to take me home it fired up!! She was suitably impressed as you can imagine!

So, I get home and switch off engine. Remove key, insert key, insert fob and hey presto it starts again, magic!

This morning as i'm about to keave for work:

ignition on, key fob in, green light, turn the key - nothing again!! Sh!!!!!!tting thing, late for work.

So, this evening i've removed the immobliser and the old alarm (whaich hasn't worked for years) and nothing.

When I turn the key in the ignition, the fuel pump primes but the starter will not turn over.

Any suggestions at all????

Keri

P.s Its a 90 digipants!

i used to have the same issue with an alarm, turn out it was the immobilser and it was dead, it used to happen when the car was either really hot or really cold, used to have to leave it for an hour and it was fine, i cant suggest what to do but all i will say is next time it happens try jump starting it as mine i cold still jump start it if i had the same problem as your having

and the reason it wont start now is cos you have removed it all, they are designed that if you remove it it still wont work

Ok thanks for that, although I don't quite get that last bit.

If its been removed in its entirety  (all oringinal wires have been reconnected) then surely thats exactly the same as if it had never been there in the first place?

oh ok i thought you just took the alarm off

some systems have back ups even if it all gets removed, but if you say it is old then it might not, but it may still have a back up on it, is it a cat 1 alarm immob?

I cant rememer whether it was a Cat 1 or 2?! It is a Scorpion 1002T if that means anything - i've got all the infomation upstairs. It was put on by VW in 97. A quantum alarm and scorpion immobiliser. The alarm hasnb't worked in years though.

Could it be anything to do with the ignition switch??

wouldnt have thought so cos it its turing and you can here the pump then the ignition sounds ok, might be the starter motor mate, how old is the starter motor, when was it last replaced

I've known the car for the last 5 years and its not been changed in that time. Could be the original, i'm not sure. Should I get a multimeter on the starter contacts and get the misses to turn it over? Is that the way you test the starter?

yeah something like that, iirc it goes live on the starter motor and earth on the body, then just turn it over so it turns once or twice and it will give you a reading, might wanna confirm it with some1 with more know how 1st tho as i may be wrong

Ignition switch. £10.

Mine had a problem, after a drive it would refuse to start - as in it would not turn over. So check all your starter wiring and check the contacts on the starter as they get rusty.

Mine was cured by the new ignition switch, its a bit fiddly to change but there are some guides on the forums.

Well i've just come back from Tesco - this time in my car!

Not that I want to sound like a numpty but -  got the multitmeter out to check the contact on the starter. A bit loose. Put it back on securely and it started!!!!! I am a mong.

At least I can go out and get a new alarm system installed now, as was I eventually going to do!

Thanks for the help guys

My guess would be the ignition switch or a sticky starter motor. :undecided:

Try cleaning the contacts on the starter and battery terminals, earth etc.

A process or trail & error i'm afraid.

had same problem with mine.

look down onto the starter motor. clean up/repair the connector which plugs onto the spade terminal on the starter motor. its the thin wire.

you might get away with wiggling it from time to time, but best get a new spade plug on the wire.
