I use Shell's own 10 - 40 in my 8v and clio 16v... Not had any problems at all.

?21.99 for 5l tho rather pricey

Castrol Gtx magnatec is pretty good as well...

anything with api or acea rating on them or vw 505.00........

i use valvoline......

i was told by a lad that a bunch of rally racers used castrol in there engine and it wore bearings out !!! it doesnt have something in it which protechs well at hihg temp so they used valvoline and had no problems......

most back street shops sell valvoline or ford dealers!

always use genuine oil filters........

I think my last filter cost ?3.50 or something from a VAG parts place. They are supposed to be better due to having a non return valve, which helps keep the oil pressure up in the top of the head when the engine is stopped?? Nice for the tappets or summat.

Mobil 1 fully synthetic.

No good if ya car has been run on sh!t from day one tho ... if u have a new car, run it on this for as long as u have it ... best oil out there.

Black - bare in mind an engine was designed to have oil with a certain vicious rating, hence the value of say 15w 40.

If you have an older engine, fully synthetic is too watery and you'll end up killin your engine !!!

I must say from a racing background I was always steered towards Vavoline.

Funny, everyone out there intrested in cars, knows what they're talking about etc... says use expensive stuff with cleaning stuff in it etc.... From owning my car from new, i have always used cheapo oil in it, and have got 120,000 miles out of it no probs, and i've not changed the oil as regurlarly as perhaps i should. I do it about 7 or 8, instead of what i believe should be 5? As of yet i haven't seen the benefit of paying more for oil. Perhaps there are, but the way people always say using cheap oil is bad.... can't understand it!!

Hi, i use Synta silver from Vee Dub in my 16v. My mate uses it in his G40 too. Good stuff, not too expensive either! ;)

its depends on what you class as cheap oil or ''cheapo'' oil..............

valvoline maxlife which i use only costs me ?10.90 for 5 litres i call that cheap but the oil quality isnt..its api sl.cf.....acea A3/B2 them ratings mean everything.....

basicly they mean that the oil has been tested and is not s*** it also means it will protect the engine from friction and wearing from lack of oil film protection....
also the oil turns to black ''sludge'' which looks like this
(http://www.auto-rx.com/images/valve-cover-with-comments.jpg)
and also causes brown varnish! which causes pistons to stick!!!!!!!! see all that brown crap!!!!
the engine should look clean! basicly like new!

cheap non api rated oils breakdown when your engines running....... lets take batterys you buy cheap ones then they wont last as long as duracell!!!! same with oil!

vw engines are strong so u abuse them they still carry on........

the dearer motor oil is the better it works but that doesnt mean cheap oil is bad........the only thing about cheap oil is when it doesnt state on the back of the bottle recomended by vw porsche etc...
or conferms to api sl/cf........ acea A3/B3

you go down the scrap yards and look at any ford and take the oil cap off and you will see back sludge!
like i always say common cars......common abuse.......
how many times have you ever seen any of your neighbours open there bonnet.!??
oil needs checking every 250 miles at least! or once a week......

my mate has a seat on finance and ive told him to check the oil every week........! he lives 20mile distance from me and only works up my area .....as he lives with his boss!
ive told him and he's ignoring me....... a month ago i said you checked the oil he said its been 2 weeks since he did, i said check it........he still hasnt and that was about a month later when i saw him again and i asked him 2 week ago if hes checked it no.......so its been over a month probibly 2 months and he's been down to telford and he goes to and from work up the m6 as he lives in stafford so thats 20mile there and back 40mile a day! thats 280 miles a week if he come up here on his day off!
it does state in the manual that the engine can burn up to 1500ml per 1000km thats about 600mile!
hes covering nearly that in 2 week! plus he's hdriving on the motorway............ if his engine goes bang he's going to be in the s***! how long does it take to check the oil.....just to pull the dip stick out!!!! ??

at least ive tried!!!...........

Thats a good point. I tend not to bother checking  my oil that much because i know from experience that it doesn't burn oil! I would check it if it was a car new to me... When i say cheap oil its like ?2.50 for 5 litres and is 20/50 viscosity. What do VW recommend, 15/50 or something?
