the button... in the car... turns off traction control.. right?
well i have it turned off but when going round a corner reasonably right. i feel almost like its on... the power feels off and on until it suddenly picks up...
when turning it off, should it turn it off completely or is it still on a tad???

not sure on the Golf but i know on my old ST that off never meant fully off, and the GTi is probably the same
-
Even when off, it steps in when needed. So it's always on, technically speaking.
-
well thats annoying... guess it wouldnt be if i ended up in a tree without it, but still, i want the control..
-
Hmmmm, i pushed my button the other day as well. When i bought the car the salesman described it as the "fun" button lol.
Anyway, corners seemed fine but it was just wheelspining all the time. Turned it off again coz of the smell of burning rubber and the fact i was getting funny looks, and all was well again

You'll never get full control unless the dealer disengages it ....and I can't see that happening.....and I can't see you telling the insurance if you did
Yes sir, that'll be another £XXXXXXX with £XXXXX excess
Seriously though, the traction control is still in the background even when you switch it off. It only comes back in to play when it thinks you ARE going into a hedge backwards.
-
well darn! i want it offfffffffffff
-
would traction control work the same on the r32 or would it work differently, not sure if i am making sense or not??
-
yours would work diff i guess being 4wd, just shifts the power to different wheels... mainly the rear i hear
-
If it wasn't for traction control and ESP hot hatches would still only have 130 hp, the technology gives the engineers the scope to put 200+hp into FWD cars.
When you do loose traction and control and it is always when you least expect it, for example on a straight road during an overtake, next thing you know you are driving on the verge.
I think on a typical UK road you are foolish to try to turn it off. Just my opinion.

Traction control is only turned off in my car if it is fine and dry, in the wet it stays firmly on :nerd:

agreed but as we all just said,,... its nto off is it

How long do your tyres last you then?? Especially if your pushing out 305BHP? 1st Gear Wheelspin, 2nd Gear Wheelspin, 3rd Gear Wheelspin....possibly fifth?? Oh and Hurdy...would be interesting to see some vids of your car and other ED30's pushing out that much BHP :nerd:

She's currently sitting at nearly 8,000 miles on the clock with about 4mm of tread left on the fronts.
Probably get through the rest this weekend  - or I can try
(do slicks work better on a 1/4 mile )
I'll get someone to take video of the dragstrip action at Santa Pod this weekend and post it on here

Sounds like a plan! Best of luck

....Extremely valid opinion imo!
On greasy B-roads on a boot-it overtake I've been very glad of TC/ESP so many times! It keeps any snaking under control. I only ever switch it off when off public roads. It's well known that such safeguards save lives on the roads. To hell with someone's selfish prowess about how well they think they can drive with it off!

It works pretty much the same way. I find though with ESP off, the haldex gets a chance to take over more. And then you can get a haldex controller which permanently shifts more power to the rear.. great for cornering.. not so great for tyres or fuel consumption

Are you planning on getting a haldex controller? I think you would need the other Haldex 2 Chip too?

Ive found that my car 'feels' quicker (in a straight line) when the TC is turned off.... To be honest i sometines think that i have a problem as all this talk of wheel spin make me worrk i havent got the power i should do. With the TC off i only get small wheel spin in 1st, 2nd hooks straight up....
Just a std GTI manual, is this normal???
-
i feel the car goes much better with it off. the power it harshly cut even in a stright line with TC on. thats why i asked, with it off it still sometimes feels like its stopping the power when i try put it back on..
-
The traction control works by venting boost pressure to reduce power, it will take a short time for the pressure to build back up maybe this is the hesitation you can feel
-
it fels more than just boost. its "on off" rather then just off then it picks up... i feels like TC is on normally but not as sensitive.
-
Traction control stays ON in my car. I have from time to time turned it off and this, for me, ends up resulting in my front tyres bunny hopping when i floor it. Esp in the wet.
The only thing i hate is when i pull out of a junction and take it to 4000/5000 revs, when traction does kick in, it makes my car sound like sh1t because it cuts out the exhaust note when it does kick in. Makes almost a farting sound. Thats the only way i can describe it. Sometimes happens in a straight line also.... It sounds

the only downside you can come up with for TC on is the exhaust note? LOL!!!
man, TC off makes the car feel like a different car. feels much faster! agreed only off in good conditions!
oh and on my first drive since my torque arm insert, i got a perfect 1st to 2nd gear change with no wheel hop! just a perfectly sounding little squeel as the power got put down! was very happy :)
-
Its quite funny this topic has come up, as I have recently been practising driving with the TC off. I have to admit the car feel like a totally different animal!! Usually going into a fast sweeping bend you can feel each wheel making little adjustments to keep the car on the line you have chosen. With the TC off it feels like the car has been let off the rails.. almost like its no longer on a leash!! Try it Manu you will notice the difference, esp when your pushing on a bit!
-
turning of traction in the old ST made it alot faster when pulling away
-
I will experiment a little further tonight and post my findings.. providing it doesnt rain :nerd:

Good words RedRobin, if it saves lives use it.

I don't drive on the road with the TC turned off but on the track it doesn't feel any faster just alot more fun
Having said that even with the TC on the car does still slide around and even gets some lift off oversteer especially in the wet, but with the added bonus that it always steps in when my skill level is exceeded

The remap I had (see my introduction post), apparantly has a modified TC as well. As it was explained to me, the normal TC completely cuts fuel when it detects wheelspin. The remap changes this by cutting fuel to each cylinder on an individual basis, thus it can anything from one to all four cylinders, depending on how much the power has to be reduced to stop wheelspin.
The TC cutting in thus not completely stops progress, and the car keep accelerating although the TC is active. To be honest however, I'm usually quite gentle in lower gears so don't use it much. I can't also really remember the feel of the TC before the remap, so it's hard to analyse the difference.
