Title: Service contract - have I been had??
Post by: mr magoo on 08 April 2008, 13:41
All

Right. I've gone in to VW and done the full works on a maintenance contract, including tyres.

I'm expecting to do around 15k miles per year and am currently on Longlife in an Ed30.

They've done it for 50 quid / month, but apparently it includes breakdown cover.

That comes out at 600/year, given the cost of tyres etc does it sound reasonable? And how long can I expect the tyres to last?

Thanks

M

Sounds a tad expensive if you factor in only one set of tyres and one service? They have to cover the unexpected mechanical failure, so inevitably you will pay. But with the extra peace of mind and breakdown cover it may be worth paying that little bit extra

How long is the contract for ?

VW were recently doing free servicing on the Golf (not sure if it included the GTI though)

My 1st service was £111

Tyres are fine - only done 8k so far - only worn a couple of mill from new  Must get out more.

To be fair you could shred a set of tyres annually and these would be likely to cost from £450 - £600 from a dealer. The way I drive mine will last to at least 25k.

Full VW breakdown cover renewal for an additional 2 years (after year 1) was only £145.

VW link here: http://www.volkswagen.co.uk/#/new/golf-gti/buying-guide/small-business/fixed-cost/

Full Maintenance plan covers clutch/brakes/drive shafts/alternator/starter/battery/exhaust/electrics/wipers/tyres. Then again, all thee major items are covered by the standarda VW 3 year warranty.

So, have you been done or just a bit too hasty or got all the bases covered......................................hmmm

It's you money - you decide :undecided:

Mind you I suppose I would rather pay a bit over the odds than have a 500 quid shock service at some point

Just make sure you 'enjoy' your tyres and at least get your moneys worth of rubber. Go for a coupld of track days

Ok i'll help try and help

1st service £ 115 at 15 k ( ish)
2nd £ 239 at 30 k ish
3 rd £ 269 at 45 k ish
brake fluid at 20 k IS £ 50
MOT AT 3 YEARS £ 50

SO THATS £ 723 POUNDS AS A MINIMUM.

Tyres are a hard one but if you drive hard or alot 45 k miles, its possible you might need 4 front and 2 rear. but to be fair lets say you only need 4 replacment tyres so that £ 400 quid.

So far we are at, £ 1123 as a minimum.

So you have to think if the other £ 600 quid, for any additional is worth it, breakdown cover, wipers, and everything else i cant think off right now.

Normally people save money by taking these agreements, it might not be a fortune but you will save money.

I've also got the full package including tyres at 10k per year and mine was only £27 a month. £50 a month makes it £23 extra for just the extra 5k miles a year.

I worked mine out on a similar basis to vw_sales and it worked out that I'd be up slightly on the deal. I'm on fixed servicing and so the following applies

£400 for Approx 4 tyres
£155 for first service (this is what it would have been as I've just had it done and they have their prices on a board)
£245 for second service (don't know if this includes the brake fluid change - anyone?)
£155 for third service
£50 for MOT
£145 for the extra breakdown cover

Which equates to £1,150 ish, so as I'm paying £27 a month that equates to £972 and a small saving.

Where they get £50 a month from is beyond me!

What age is your car mr magoo ? .... and what mileage ?   ... and what size tyres ? ... and how many miles per annum ?

I believe the monthly charge depends largely on the above  :undecided:

eg car 11 months old, 11,000 miles - due service and new 18" tyres soon - expect high monthly amount

car brand new - expect much lower monthly amount

As i said before most people save money over the three years.

I have nothing to gain by misleading you, i've not sold it to you.

As for those that have paid £ 99 for a service at 30 k

Bet your on time distance, and are doing less or possibly equall to 10 k miles per year.

The guy asking the question will be at 30k miles after two years, it makes a massive differance.

But at the end of the day, you have to be comfortable with the payment, personally i would prefere to pay 50 per month than have one big bill all at once say £ 400, and i bet sure as eggs is eggs your service light will come on as your tax is due, so £ 400 for service and £ 400 quid for tax, i bet you wish you were paying 50 per month then.

Car was born nearly 4 weeks ago, I expect 15000 miles a year, 18" wheels (Continental tyres at the mo), on Longlife.

Thanks all, esp vw_sales, I think I'll stick with it.

I agree put the £50 in a saving account, earn some interest and you can look after your own money and choose what tyres you want.

i took this on my mk4 gti @ £27 p/m, over 3 years.
i got the tyres, 1years breakdown cover, servicing, and bits.
bad bit only did 25k miles over 3 years, so got one service and an mot, my tyres were mint so they wouldn't change them.
phoned VW and they gave me back £450 at the end.so never again, warranty covers most things, and the sales people didnt advise there was dif levels of cover.mind its com for them.
