Title: 5th Gear Whine!!

My 8v golf has started to whine but only, as the title suggests, in fifth gear.  Does this mean something has broken or is about to break or does the gearbox maybe need a wee top up?

CHange your gearbox oil first. Apart from warn 2nd gear Syncro 5th gear is the next thing to go in these boxes.

The whine might be the Mrs in the Passenger seat ?

Yes I thought about that too but this time the whining didn't stop when she got out!

ive got a whine too, only started after i drove through a pothole at 50ish though. maybe suspension is fooked? that was my first thought, and it does come from passanger side.

Well. topped up gearbox oil and it is much quieter! Might be good for a while yet. :smiley:
