Title: TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: marcus123 on 15 April 2004, 15:59
hello forum,

being new to owning a gti i am wondering what boy racer type cars i could easily beat off the lights, and what to definately not mess about with?

ive got an 8v digifant, i hate saxo drivers!
is my car quicker than a VTS?

what have ypu all raced out there and beaten ;D?
or what have you raced and been embarressd by >:(?

I would imagine that you might be ok with Saxo's especially the 8v ones whichever they are.

I would avoid Civic Type Rs, Clio 172s etc. Renault 5 GTturbos, RS turbos. And definitley G40s should you be lucky enough to see one.

Stick to racing other Gti's and XR2is, XR3is, AXGTs etc etc.

Oh yeah.... You can race just about ANY mk4 Golf Gti and win but leave them funny R32 thingies well alone.

You should find that off the Mark you will be quick but once your into 2nd gear you will start falling behind to the really quick stuff. Any modern hot hatches are going to be quicker, but get your power down right and you could worry a few people.

anything with a motor bigger than a 1.6 and a sports badge sitting on the back for my CL ;)

stop racing boys unless you're racing EVO's or Scoobys with middle ages twits driving them and you know your TT powered mk2 will eat them once you gain grip ;D

mmmmmmn so wot CAN we race...... ??? its seems 2 me that the GTi cant even keep up wiv most cars let alone smoke them at the lights.....  if only i was older enough 2 own 1 back in 1989 wen golf GTi's were the daddy
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: VeeDubGTI16v on 17 April 2004, 13:44
thats cos every hot hatch has got 170+ bhp nowadays. old gti's handle far better tho and are more fun to drive. to be honest i can keep up with most things in my valver unless its 180bhp+, which aint bad at all for a 15 yr old car

the 8v was never that quick even in late 80s early 90s. it was the quality hot hatch, not the fast one. and there were plenty of things to beat it.

the 16v was always the hot date. whatever beat it to 60 was behind it at 100.

Saxo's suck & I'm supprised not to see more of them on Chavscum  ;D

I love giving them some stick, I've got a Mk2 16v & there no problem VTR or VTS.

4motions on the other hand, had one be hind me the other day, thought it was just a GTI, lol. Not to much bother up to about 70 then he struggled past and I just laughed when I realised what it was.

Saab 93 Aero6's, there fun to beat too.

ok, well i only drive a 1.3, so im at kind of a disadvantage, still, ive beaten a 1.4 dun up metro (ill get a picture of it sumtime for u all to laugh at!), almost beat a 1.4 pug 306xs, and ive beaten a 1.4 mk3 golf :)... that was quite even... a couple of old citroens, a 205 1.4 pug.... a 1.5 lada!!... admitedly that was a close one as he had modded the engine.. this and that!

to be honest mate, its not what you drive, but how you drive it.

if you have a fast car - its not a foregone conclusion that you will beat someone, you still have to work for it.

i find it more fun to be the under dog - you always have the advantage that no one expects you to pick on a 996 Turbo. Just make sure you pick a run where the advantages are in your favour :)

Definately agree Tin ... god it's so nice to give someone a shock though!!

I've not had time or the money as yet to get something meaty in my Golf - Only had her 6 months or so !!! But my previous car (Sorry yes it was a Ford ... ) started as a bit of fun and got way outa hand, complete 'sleeper'.

Old Fiesta XR2 (Standard trim Outside) vs. E30 M3 - boy did he get a shock !

i did sorta have one, my mgtf vs porsche 944 (2.5) a couple of days ago. i was losing, but not by much, and it was one of the few times - damn - my 16v would of mauled this guy and then some.

The best ones are the sad blokes aged between 30-40 who get all excited because they have a bottom of the range company car (usually BMW 3 series or Merc). Most of these cars struggle to do 0-60 in less than 9.5 secs.

There's about 10 miles of dual carraigeway near me split by about 7-10 roundabouts (actually its the final bit of of dual carraigeway that takes you to this years GTI int). I've had great fun hassling these tie and shirt boys round the roundabouts - their cars weigh about twice as much. I've only got a 81 1600 GTI but I always get them with third gear, which I can stay in till about 80 mph. ;D ;D ;D

mums 6 speed 2002 Bora TDI Sport, Its a Ex VW show car riding on VW golf 17s and is great fun for racing people in, I drive it a lot when i dont want to use my Mk2. All the boy racers that ive raced in my CL (and won ;)) usally take the piss out of it calling it a grandad car, They stop laughting when they heer the turbo spooling and im shifting into 6th gear at 140MPH  ;D

Ive Been in a 5 way race between a Astra 1.4, a AX with a 1.6 swap, My car, An Excort Turbo and a Cossy down the A41.

The cossy and the escort spend most of the time ahead but i kept up with them quite well around the bends after we left the bypass, The Astra and AXs where easy tho. So i didnt really have anyone to race, The escorts where ahead, The Astra and AX where behind, And i was in the middle Playing with my sterio  ;)

That was the day i got my car off the clock (over 120MPH) On a little slope with damp conditions and a bend at the end, Had a few traction Issues round that bend and all 5 cars seemed to take it with a slight degree of sideways motion  ;)

Of course...That was the A41 in germany im talking about....Honest!

yup, took my 16v to germany a few weeks ago and was pulling through 130 quite easily. (and i remembered to turn on the GPS for once!). i only started pulling up due to traffic. as for bumps - totally smooth ;)

plus i had a major conscience about returning with a broken engine. errm, still meant to be runnin it in. ahem.

dont know where i would of landed as the car was still pulling and still had 600-800 rpm to roll before fun rev limiter time.

Back to the 1st question.. The Saxo VTR isn't too hot and fairly beatable, but the VTS is different. I had an
"R" plate for a year and remember reading the spec at the time in different magazines and its 0-60 varied from 7.2-7.6 seconds depending on the review. I know 0-60 isn't everything but for a traffic light grandprix it is! So you need to be faster than approx 7.4s 0-60 to smoke one.. Takes a fairly quick motor! For anyone that doesn't know, theres absolutely no way to tell a VTS from a VTR from the back or front, you can only tell by the side badge near the front wheel arch and the 16V silver badge on the rear side pillar (VTR=1.6 8v 100bhp, VTS=1.6 16V 120 bhp). Happy racing fellas!

The original mk1 golf gti was very light, it had 110bhp, 0-60 was about 8 sec.
You need a lot of power to get a 7 sec or less 0-60, or good gearing.

Have you driven a 16v yet, both 8 & 16 have good and bad points, but ultimately the 16v will be cheaper in the long run to get decent power, as I plan on going 2L.
I'm still keeping an eye out for a nice one, I don't mind paying a decent price but the problem is nice ones are really hard to come by!

Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: Mixologist on 03 June 2004, 21:15
^^^haha, they gotta have there egos stamped on by a bigger and better car!!!  And it being a xr2 makes it even more worth it. . . .

Im hopeless with the traffic light racers, 1.3's don't pull quite like how i want it to pull   :(

Moped are the other wayne kerrs that annoy me at the lights
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS

Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: marcus123 on 25 June 2004, 08:23
yeh i beat quite a few cars in it.

cleaned up an rs turbo last week, that was v satisfying :)

my 16v eats saxos for breakfast ;)

best race i had recently was with this bmw 328i,
bullied him and then took over, guy looked shocked that he was getting beaten by a 15 yr old car :o :o

i used to have an 8valve, saxo vtrs are no problem :D
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: 16v Matt on 25 June 2004, 10:31
LOL, there is no way the guy in the 328 was racing he would have blown ya doors off! :'(
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: marcus123 on 25 June 2004, 11:23
no way man :D

maybe it was a 323 badged as a 328i?

either way it was dealt with >:(
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: marcus123 on 25 June 2004, 13:12
no it wouldnt mate,

2.3's are no way as quick as a 16valve matey,
look it up in parkers :P
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: Chrisb on 25 June 2004, 13:38
ive raced my mates 106 gti a couple of time and he absolutly wastes my 8v raced saxo's vts and they dont seem to pull away anywhere near asmuch  ???
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: 16v Matt on 25 June 2004, 15:22
Sorry matey, 16v's are quick. I know i've got one. But they just won't cope with a 6 cylinder 3ltr beemer engine. My mates got a VERY fast G40 that will give TT's a good run for their money & he can only just have a 328. I know for a fact his 0-60 is in the low 6's. Just accept the fact that there are many cars out there that will b!tch slap a 16v & a 328 is one of em!!
Could be a different story on twisty lanes though ;D
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: marcus123 on 25 June 2004, 16:07
it was a relatively twisty carrigeway, and the guy did drive like a bit of a pussey, :D

but he was going for it, could of been a 323i,
328s arent that quicker than a 16valver mate ;)

im talkin about the old 328i, not the new 330ci

massive diffrence mate :D :-*
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: S11EPS on 25 June 2004, 16:25
Parkers quotes a 0-60 time of 6.8 seconds and a top end of 150mph for a 328.

Thats some-way off the performance of a Mk2 16v dude!

Bare in mind that the torque of the bimmer straight 6 is going to offer massive mid-range grunt, the 0-60 benchmark is probably the one with the least difference as well.

There is no doubting that the Mk2 16v is a quick motor, but if that bimmer was being driven as you were driving your Mk2 I personally think there is little chance you'd have passed him, sorry.

Post by: 16v Matt on 25 June 2004, 16:33
Don't matter how old it was mate, I would treat anything bigger than 320i with some respect!

Cos they WILL make you look like a monkey if they want to!
To be honest i've had my ass kicked by quite a few beemer diesels too. :'(
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: 16v Matt on 25 June 2004, 16:38
How did the word disagree get in my post?!!

It should have read "I've had my ass kicked by quite a few beemer diesels" ???

Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: marcus123 on 25 June 2004, 16:55
parker quote 7.4 for a 328i, e36 model

im NOT talking about a 330 e46 model,

id eat a 323i for breakfast ;)
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: 16v Matt on 25 June 2004, 20:10
yep i meant a55. lol ;D

Sorry mate I think we're just going to have to agree to disagree on this one.

But i'm right 8)

LOL

Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: 16v Matt on 27 June 2004, 08:29
I kmow exactly what i'm on with, my dad had a 528i & that would give a 16v a real good run for its money! So a smaller car with the same size engine. Do the maths mate! :-*
Title: Re:TRAFFIC LIGHT RACERS
Post by: marcus123 on 27 June 2004, 12:18
323i would be smoked :-*

328i would be interesting, but i wouldnt bank on me winning :-\

Insanity.  Unless you've got something special under that bonnet of yours, the beamer would win hands down if he was trying.  Sorry.  :P

lets see how quick our cars are at gti festival on the 11th july ay santa pod!!! im sure once weve all had 'official' print outs jv coul put up some kind of table of results???this may or may not help clear up a few things on here as for 1/4 mile times but at the end of the day driver skill at the lights has alot to do with it!!, i be playin all day at the pod in my 16v, just for a laugh nowt serious, but i tell you from my experience (motorbike drag raced in 'straighliners' series) its more about reaction times!!! should be some suprising results if peeps know what there doing!!

Yo Gaz,
I'm thinkin of coming up.
Would be interesting to see 0-60, 1/4 mile times, although alot will depend on the condition of the cars and the drivers.

Some funny stories in this thread! :D
Caned a MG ZR in my 1.8 mk1, and always caning 3-Series beemers up to 328i. Great fun!
The mk1 canes my 4-Motion too up to around 45mph.
All in all, not bad for a 22 yr old car with 175k on the clock!

(Put my pics in the gallery, then linked to my sig.
How can I get them smaller!)

Resize them in Paint or something like that, then upload the smaller pics and link to them.

And do it before someone on Dial Up takes out a contract on you! ;D
