Title: Head gasket needs replacing any other jobs to get done at the same time
Post by: dready chris on 05 April 2008, 20:23
Just had my headgasket tested today, looks like it needs replacing . The mechanic tested the coolant for gases and said it was showing traces of them indicating that it's on the way out. Was wondering if there there any other jobs which would be a good idea to get done at the same time while the head is off.
The car is a mk3 gti 8v.

Cheers

Always change the cambelt,  i do it even if i changed it a month or so before,  Change the tenssioner as well!! (usualy a kit anyway)  While thats off to the water pump and thermostat.

Also.. depending on how/why the gasket blew.. Have the head checked, if its noisy its a perfect time i slip a new set of lifters in there ;)   If your into that kinda thing.. you can have a go at porting/polishing your head while its off.   I painted my rocker cover a very nice silver while i had mine off.

Oh.. a new exahust and manifold gasket might go down well if its been disturbed

You could get the head skimmed, look at valve stem seals replacement, replace valve cover gasket and replace the exhaust manifold nuts (and studs if you can be bothered) while your at it.
