Today ive almost finished colour codeing my new smaller rear VW badge.
If you old rear badge is anything like mine its gone gray and the rubber on the edge has started peeling from age.
The new one is from the vw sharan and is smaller than the standard mk4 badge (Badge measures 90mm in diameter) -and will sit nicely inside the indent on the tailgate - Nice subtle mod :afro:
I know lots of you have done this already its one of these mods ive been meaning to do for ages
When finished should look like this:
To Remove your huge VW frisbee  :
You will need:
1.Sharan Badge- part no 7M3853630AULM approx £20 or so now
2.Double sided foam /tape
3.Wet and Dry Paper 600/1200
4.Spray paint - Got mine from halfords mixed from paint code :afro:, Lacquer
5.Plastic Primer
6.Stanley knife
Have a look at this and see what you think
First thing you need is the rear badge from the vw sharan part no: 7M3853630AULM
(http://i163.photobucket.com/albums/t318/richw911/badge1.jpg)
Heres a pic of the new and old one together:
Now you need to remove the sticky tape from the badge:
Next you need to remove the glue from the six lugs at the back of the badge i used a stanley knife.
Now it should come apart and look like this:
Now use some 600 grit to "key" up the backing of the badge:
Then prime with plastic primer, Tip; put the spray can in a tub of hot water to get the paint nice and thin and up to room temp. :
When the primer is completely dry again "key" it up but this time using 1200 grit paper.
Next apply the first coat of your body colour - Take your time and never rush when painting alway wait for the paint to dry completly before next coat:
I gave mine three coats - "keying" Each time using 1200 wet and dry paper between coats.
Next when colour paint is completly dry its time for the lacquer- Again you need to use 1200 grit and plenty of water to lose the shiny top coat.
Now this may seem strange to sand the top coat but you need to do this to achieve the correct colour match and for the lacquer to "take" properly.
After its completely dry you need to place it back together and re - glue the six lugs where you removed the original glue.
More pics to follow when my lacquer is dry and it is fitted to the car

They're pretty easy to get off, prizing the bade off with a bit of heat/hot water to soften the sticky foam pads helps. Stickiness left over can be rubbed off, polished up to clean throughly.
Mines off currently as have been painting it black, but might opt for the sharan badge shorty :smug: looks ace!

True  you just push it back together and put some glue on the parts you removed the original glue from
-
Got my sharan badge today, just need to paint it now.
-
just done mine freshens it up nic, good mod! i stuck it back together with top quality super glue hope that holds as i remove those round melted bits.

Also copied rich and done the front as its a bit uneven if i didnt do it is a bit tricky if your not to good at painting as its tight to get the paint in there without applying to much which causes dribble (not nice)

Do you still have all the gear? ie primer, blue paint etc? Could be easier than me buying it all?
Obviously I would cover costs etc?

Got a VW Sharan Badge from the stealers & just got off my Front VW Grill Badge..
I will be spraying them Matt Black..
Any suggestions what paint to use??..
-
Going to do this mod shortly. Just a question, can i just remove the sharan badge from the backing and just use double sided tape to attach to boot or is there a reason why people use the backing piece

tells you in the first post matei
The new one is from the vw sharan and is smaller than the standard mk4 badge (Badge measures 90mm in diameter) -and will sit nicely inside the indent on the tailgate
-
i used a screwdrive and a cloth but people will shoot me down for that.. just heat it up with a hairdryer get your finger behind and just pull off and then remove excess glue..
-
i used dental floss heated the badge then pulled it down between the badge and car .
-
Boil some water in your kettle... have a brew.. Then the rest of the water pour down badge.. Then dental floss round the back of badge and pull it off. Simples!!
-
Hi just seen a sharan badge it says diameter is 81mm? Would this work? Part No is 7M0 853 601 G 639
Thanks its £15 btw
-
7M3853630AULM is what you need. I ordered one a couple of days ago with that part no. 22 quid.
