Title: Steering has (slight) mind of its own!!
Post by: Tornado on 04 April 2008, 23:14
Got my car back from the garage today with fresh MOT.  However there are a couple of little problems.
the car steers slightly on its own randomly left and right, they are only small movements but it is un-nerving.  It also make a whine now that it didn't before(only when in gear), all that was changed at the front was track rod end and a steering rack gaitor.

Can anyone suggest what might be causing this, especially the steering?

Many thanks
Alan

I would assume its PAS, is the fluid topped up properly? Is there adequate tension in the belt? As long as the tracking/camber is fine, it might just be the banking of the road affecting left/right steer.

The pas is ok. i have had the car for 3yrs. i think it may be camber/tracking after repair work yesterday just wondered if anyone could confirm?

Thanks
Alan

I had this, tracking/camber setup didn't help so I changed all wishbone bushes and bottom ball joints.

SORTED!

Just passed MOT so the bushes should be ok but I will check them.

Has the tracking/wheel alignment been adjusted (assume so).

A friends MK2 had some wandering issues, turned out the four 13mm bolts that secure the rack to the subframe were loose.

mine too had passed MOT, but still enough play to give the steering the shakes!

Yes because in theory to fail and MOT on the wishbone bushes they must be..

    . cracked, fractured or insecure
    . severely distorted
. seriously weakened by corrosion or wear
. which is adjustable, and is loose in its adjustment threads, or its locking device insecure or missing
    . inadequately repaired
. seriously weakened as a result of deliberate modification

I'd have to agree with the rest, it sounds like a wishbone bush to me to, tracking can mask some problems in this area.

As above mate, check the steering rack bolts. on mine they didn't just come loose they snapped, I still had a problem so replaced the wishbones and slapped some powerflex bushes on for good mesure then had a all the geomatry sorted. it felt by far, better than a new car when that lot had been done.

How much if any, is the car lowerd?

It is lowered 40mm. Has been for a while but has only just started this since mot a few days ago.

Sounds like they might have finished a bush off  on the brake tester or something like that.

Quite possible re the bush!
the whine is interesting cos it only happens in fifth gear and has only startred since the Mot a few days ago. Is fifth high up in the box, i am hoping it might just need some oil?
Cheers

Cause fo the problem turned out to be a balljoint. Think it just gave up the ghost at mot time. Poss car sitting about for 9 months hasn't helped.
