Well I've given my wheels a simple home refurb and i think they look good... I used lots of wet and dry, an electric detail sander, hi build primer and normal car paint and some laquer for final shine and more protection...
original shabby rims after there first electric sanding...
with some really poor area's that needed extra time and care
(http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd80/nataliyas/DSCN4332.jpg)
after sanding them fairly smooth and removing all the kerb damage they got the first coat of primer
(http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd80/nataliyas/DSCN4333.jpg)
when dry i gave them another sand to remove the small imperfections and lots more primer
(http://i224.photobucket.com/albums/dd80/nataliyas/DSCN4334.jpg)
then I gave them lots of normal car paint giving them a smooth sanding after each coat until it was smooth... and to finish it they got several coats of laquer...giving the final results as below (and can you spot the scrapes shown in the first picture??)
the insides also got sanded and some paint and look nearly as good as the outsides.. and the paint is strong enough as my trye fitters arn't the most gentle people and there's no scratches/chips
See below for fitted pictures

top job mate looks spot on! i bet you were pleased with the finish!
-
10/10 for effort!!
Top job.

-
will be doing exactly the same witha set of sebrings over the coming weeks...

i might try and get some RH alloys, then see their condition and refurb them like this. Looks very rewarding, nice work!
ohh and i might refurb my old alloys then and sell 'em!!! thanks for the influence,
LL ;)

Nice work! its really satisfying when they come out well, and you think to yourself..."I just saved 200 quid"
-
here's the wheels fitted.... and with 195's all round to stop the rubbing i had on the rears (I have spacers fitted! all though it does look narrower on the rear?)
all in i spent £20 on wheels (set of 4).. £12 primer and wet n dry.. £18 on paint and laquer and two tryes for £60 (fulda's)...
-
now thats a bargin, how long in total did it take to do all the wheels as im thinking bout srpaying my wheels black with a silver lip to match the car

being mr impatient i spend a total of 12 hours sanding and painting all 4!... 2 hours a night and mr sander soon got them all done... i sanded 1 then primed it and while that was drying started sanding another and on and on and on... and it was much more simple without tryes

Any chance you could go into some details about the sandpaper grades/wet n dry/sanding machine you used?
I've got a set of rare steelies that need resprayed but I don't fancy paying £40 a pop to have them professionally done!
-
Yeah I second that, I have 2 sets of alloys I am going to refurb in the comign weeks so a simple how to would be useful.
-
Top job m8....more rewarding when you do them yourself eh
Done this to loads of wheels before and was always chuffed when i saw the result
Specially when your saving £
Should be proud of yoursel

Please do: I'm building up to a homespun alloy refurb.
If I can get somewhere near your standard I'll be well happy.
-
sorry - just another quick question:
did you do the whole alloy, or just the 'face' of it? so just side where the imperfections were or did you do the part the tyre covers/inside also?
sorry if its a stupid q, just interested :embarassed:

I will post a how too guide (maybe this weekend if time allows!!)
oh and I did remove the tyres to give them a final paint and ran my sander over the edges to make clean and flake free..they got a coat of simple wheel paint to make them good again
-
looks good dude

How did you go about getting the tyres off and on again, isn't this usually done with a machine? (I know anything a machine can do can be done by hand but it implies it's difficult or sumit)

Sorry to bring up an old topic, didnt wanna start a new one for the same thing!
I have Anni wheels that are need of a refurb.... some of the paint on places has been chipped down to the metal, does this mean the wheel will have to be sanded down to the metal all over and build back up????
I like what you have done to these wheels... gives a bit of inspiration...
-
well I think i should show my latest effort
(following on from my polished wheel refurb http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=116843.0 (http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=116843.0))
Audi wheels as fitted to my passat in boring silver
(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k165/boneybradley/DSC05653-1.jpg)
rubbed down with wet and dry, primed and the outer rim painted with wheel silver (excuse the tyre but this was one that got changed thanks to a huge lump in the side!)
when dry I masked the outer rim (with 3m masking tape as it's less likely to peel fresh paint)
remove tape and I then used an artist brush to fill any missed spots around the spokes
(http://i88.photobucket.com/albums/k165/boneybradley/DSC05734.jpg)
wait a few days and then cut, polish and wax and refit (with legal/safe tyres!!)
