Is the gearbox earth intact?
-
maybe the engine has given up?
.... i got no idea mate... just feel sorry 4 u
-
So that would stop it starting and cause the burning smell?
-
Where is the burning smell coming from? you said it was strong so surely you can trace it.
:)
-
it smelt like it was coming from the right hand side of the engine around inbetween the battery and the block head or whatever u wanna call it lol, but it was windy, and you couldnt see much, there was no smoke or bad lookin wires.

Check the main gearbox earth.

at least your's turns over Danr. mine's in the clicking solenoid, but no turn over stage at the mo. 2 weeks until TT lump too :'(
I don't want to spend any money on it

I would put ?10 on it being a fried coil.
This happened to my car and that smelled rancid too!
If your coil has any black goo leaking from it then it has fried itself - and don't touch the black goo - its quite toxic!!!
New coil pack I'm affraid.

mine turned out to be a bad earth lead from the gearbox to the battery. just replaced it and it fired right up singing away ;D
just gotta put the f**king loom back in now. it was hanging out cos I thought that was the problem >:(
At least I can cable tie is all nice now :)
