Title: Hi noob here need advice on buying a golf
Post by: ash159 on 01 April 2008, 22:10
 as title says really atm ive got a 1.25 mk5 ford fiesta 2001, fancy something abit faster + more boot space,

my budget is around the 3k mark i do about 11,000 miles a year plus use the car daily for work if that helps.

If anyone could point me in the right direction of what to look for when looking at mk3/4's i would be very greatfull. oh and whats the average millage im looking at for my budget?

oh and if this is the wrong section my apologizes

Welcome, you'll love it here, everyone's really friendly and kind. I've only been here about a week and already feel like a member of the family

As to your question, I'd say Autotrader, that's where I got mine from, but I only paid £900 for it, if you got £3000 then you'll be looking at something quite tidy and nippy!

Right been looking around auto trader and places it seems with private sellers mk3 2.0 gti go for around 1200-1500 for a decent milage 80k-110k does this seem about right?

as for traders they seem to be asking 2000+ for ones with like 130k+ milage.

How much should i look at the milage when buying? how important is it to have a car with a low milage keeping in mind il have it for about 2 years i recon. used everyday as well so needs to be reliable. i mean i would stick with my fiesta as its reliable as anything but just not fast enough for my liking. got a quote for a mk3 golf 2.0 gti and works out about £20 more a month than im paying atm for my fiesta  how that works i dunno.

cheers

The 16v Mk3 is faster than the 8v by quite a bit. But if insurance is an issue, then go for the 8v and it'll still be better than your Fiesta.

Try shopping around for insurance quotes as getting a fresh quote (for a new policy) will work out cheaper than just changing the car on your existing policy.

Just having a GTI model will make it more expensive to insure even if it's just the 8v GTI with *only* 116bhp.

I would agree, definately don't pay anymore than £1700 for a Mk3 8v GTI and only a hundred or two more for a 16v. There's plenty around so don't pay silly money.
Lower mileage is good, but so is history. Look out for gearbox, clutch, ecu, ABS and electric window problems as these are probably the most common.

Welcome and good luck with the search.
