Just wondering how many Mk1's are still performing daily driving duties or are they mostly weekend cars?

Only use mine when it's raining and can't be bothered to cycle to work, and for pottering around at weekends, but up until 2005 it was used nearly every single day for 8 years. Hence the mileage.
-
Used to be a daily driver...now she's lucky if shes on the road six months a year..although does help keep the mileage down, the salt off my bodywork and she gets serviced about every 3k (service before shes comes back on the road)

what do you drive when not in the mk1 for the other 6 months?
-
mainly sitting in the garage in many many pieces

Daily drive
currently in the garage and getting lifts lol
-
had 3 since february last year and wont be stopping anytime soon :P
-
thanks for all the replies, thinking about getting one myself and just wondered if its practical to have one as a daily driver or am I best keeping my reliable MK4 and using a MK1 just for pleasure, thing is I dont have a driveway.....
-
Sold my cab last year, but I used mine as a daily for 4 years with very little problems. Put 40k on it and sold it with 132k on the clock. If I had a mk4 and a mk1 I'd use the mk4 as a daily and the mk1 as my toy. Personally, I think they are getting too old to use as daily drivers but perfect for a project/toy/weekends etc.
-
yea mate fair point, they are getting old.... think ill keep my mk4 anyways as it is so reliable (just jinxed myself now)
-
I use mine for hasseling 450bhp+ Ricers

had my mk1 for two and a bit years, tried to use it as a daily, took it to france for a holiday but it all took its toll on the old gal, wasted a shed load of cash on that car, would buy one again unless someone had already spent a load on it first. If you have the time and money then they are great cars, they just look the sh!t! great for sunny weekends and shows but as a daily...... not really
-
what about with a 1.8T lump in it then rob? is the reliability the problem?
-

well the old k-jet is an arse to work on and get set up, not many places really know how to do them these days! as for the 1.8t then yes that would be a good choice, at least you know you can get spares for the lump and that it hasnt been to the moon and back, but then you have to sort the brakes which are poor to say the least, then the body work, oh and get the fuel tank and filler changed, this caused me loads of trouble. They are pritty well built but tin worm can be a pain and its hard to get some panels. if you can pick up a pre-done up one i think its worth paying the extra cash, i think it would cost you less in the long run.

Allways happy to please
I was VERY lucky to get the car from a guy on Club GTi who had put the car through 5 years of developement to get the car sorted. I've done a fair bit to it to upkeep it and there is allways something to do on it but that's why I got it. I've learnt so much about how a car functions and what things do.
I've got to do all the rear brake set up next week...pistons/cables/shoes and drums...yep still runs on drums
-
well wen mine is finished it will prob just be a weekend car as i got a mk4 for a daily but am considering a 20vt for it so things could change
-
At the moment it's on the drive, with a wheel off and the caliper hanging off, but I intend to drive it a lot. Just hoping someone buys my beemer so I can pay for it.
-
Ive just rang my insurance company up to see about getting a weekends cover so I could go and pick one up but they have just told me they dont insure cars that old! they insure me on my MK4 GTI but wouldnt on a MK1... dam

drums? you mad head...
Yeah I have to agree that when you do start pulling it to bits, you learn more about the car...
not sure If im ever going to do it again, but it is a learning curve!

Try Adrian Flux...they do both my Mk3 16v and the Mk1 with all the mods. If not try A-plan....well try both and play them off for the best quote. Do Flux first and then take £100 or so off when speaking to A-plan and I'll bet they will match it. They play sneakily so why can't we. I did this for my renewal in Feb and got Flux to drop the renewal by £96. They always have £50-100 they can knock off but don't as it will eat into thier bonus
-
...also have a look in the insurance section on here and speak to MartinB at HIC. He'll deffo be able to sort something out.
-
Oh yea will defo look into them companys come renewal time. I cant afford to switch at the moment as Halifax gave me such a good deal for this year so it looks likw ill either have to wait or invest in a trailer and a towbar
