I spose if you know what the chip looks like you could take the metal ecu cover off and have a look?
But appart from that mate i doubt it.
Unless he knows the company name, they might have a record of it being done?

ECU usually located under the plastic scuttle tray (where the wiper motor is located but facing left side) unless you know what your doing don't bother as you can short the ECU by accident if the wrong thing is touched or pulled.
If you must take it out disconnect the battery first.
unscrew the plastic bolt then it should just slid of two plastic brackets, remember to put back the scuttle if you plan on having it out for awhile, otherwise the ECU jack plug and power connectors (Two one black, one white) will get wet and then you will have problems!

when/if you do finally get the ecu out and open her up, there are two printed circuit boards in there. the bottom board has the fuel map chip on it. there are two identically shaped chips on the lower board and if one has a "performance" or such like sticker on it then the standard one has been replaced. the chips look exactly like this:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-JETTA-MK2-8V-GTI-DIGIFANT-PERFORMANCE-CHIP-6HP_W0QQitemZ290218309938QQihZ019QQcategoryZ32094QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

it could have had one of these fitted which uses a generic "performance" fuel map.

cheers for that mate, it sounds like if any that will be what it may well be as i do get very good MPG from my golf on long motorway trips, and it is really reposive when i put my foot down, my last mk2 gti was almost the same but this one feels like it pulls better, i guess another way to find out is get it RR'd yeah?

I fitted a DubPerformance chip to my 1991 8v Digi today and its def' made a differance. Gives a cleaner pull from 900rpm to just under 6000rpm in all gears. Really happy with it
