.I had a 00 tdi 110 and 02 130 and i loved them. i.m going back to the mark 4 so which should i get 1.8 20V or TDI 150 i do alot of driving and as i'm form ireland the insurance is more or less the same on them both .

1.8 20V turbo, or NA?
If it were me I'd go for the TDI - it's not like the four cylinder petrols make a terribly inspiring noise, so you might as well go diesel.
I wouldn't get too bent out of shape if you have difficulty finding a 150 TDI - you can always get a 130 chipped up above that level anyway!

the TDI 150 will outperform the 1.8 20v all day everyday and still return you good mpg, although a TDI 150 is going to cost more than a 1.8 20v
if its the 1.8T you're looking at, they are pretty much the same performance wise, so it will come down to how many miles you're doing.
i'd go for the TDI though

if your using it for commuting them the tdi, you can always chip it when your bored of the 150bhp.
if its just performance and fuel isnt a problem, then 1.8t and get it chipped up. roll on 200 bhp.

TDI all day

Due to the fact that they have the same peformance you have to work out how many miles you do a year and then work out the price diffrence between the cars. It could take as long as 15 - 20k miles to break even on the extra thousands of pouns you have spent on the TDI over the 1.8T.
-
still not sure if he meant the 1.8 20v N/a or the turbo...
-
1.8t power delivery is bland to say the least, get the diesel if i were you.....

Sound advice.

"Bland" is perhaps a bit cynical. Having owned one for three years I would say the 1.8T is a fantastic lump that in standard form delivers power in a neutral way (a compliment - think the opposite of a renault 5 turbo), and it feels relentless in terms of torque. Plus its infinitely tuneable.

1.8t 20v or 150TDI . whats the N/A GTI's like
