Post by: Andy Jeffries on 31 March 2008, 12:43
Was doing some work yesterday and checked my oil, could not get a reading so added around 3/4 of a Litre..still no reading, fired up car for a few secs then re took reading...it was showing about 3/4 over the max line on the dipstick...am I gona have to drain off this excess or will I be ok?

Safest bet is to drain it back down to the max line. Not that much hassle.

Thats what I thought - btw I work for Castrol and didn't wana ask my technical team for fear of having the piss taken out of me!

Do people normally struggle to get a reading off the dipstick from cold?

My dipstick struggles in the cold too.

Do you just run for a few seconds then take a reading?

your dipstick or your dipstick??

my oil is usually black anyway so i have no problems!

you might find that once you've run the engine the oil might have splashed up the dipstick giving you a false reading?

Nah I have to keep it hidden since the court order.

My valver "loses" a lot of the oil up into the head on only a short turnover of the engine e.g. to move it off the drive, so to get an accurate reading I have to leave it a good ten minutes or so (longer ideally).

The dipstick also sometimes manages to somehow miss the oil and show an empty tank, then on the next dip shows loads of oil!
