hey! I guess the MK2 and other golf systems are similar so i will try my luck in this section....
I have a MK3 GTI 8V i fully drained the system to remove the rad and now i cant seem to get the air out I have fitted a new thermostat now but the bottom rad pipe never gets warm! I run it with the cap off to the point where it just boils over, I dont seem to be getting anywhere.....
Does any one have any tricks to get the air out ??
Cheers.

Only thing i know is to squeeze the two large pipes with the lid off the expansion tank man, this usually seems to get things moving for me.

Did you fill it from the top of the rad or expansion tank?
If you fill from the top of the rad hose it minimises the air, plus massaging for a about half an hour relasing the expansion cap once cool should be an indication if there is still air i.e hisss.
The other one is to feel all pipes and see if there is pressure against the hose if there is then there is still air trapped in the system. Failing all that the system is sucking air from somewhere so look for leaks and a faulty expansion cap is another sign of letting pressure out so the water flow is not quiet right.
The final problem is the water pump not doing its job. Use the search function it might help!
Good luck

and bleed the system with the heater on full so it draws water through the matrix...the number of air locks ive seen in these!!

As above and try this :- http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=33252.0

The heater matrix is working fine, i have tryed everything and im certain the water pump is working fine... it certainly was before i took the radiator off! I did fill it from the top of the rad, and i have tryed all i can think of! Just over heats again.

ounds like a faulty thermostat

Same thought but i changed it for a new one, and tested the old one and that was fine... :undecided: :undecided:

i had this problem wen i changed my thermostat it turned out the new thermostat opend at a higher temperature than the old 1 i'd giv that a thought other than that cap off, heater on and squeezin pipes did the trick strate away

Nothing worked for me so i scrapped the car
