Title: wheels and mods'
Post by: Greeny on 13 April 2004, 20:46
Hi, new to site and to VW ownership. However best car I've had so far. Just bought 8"x17" rims, and will be putting 255/40/17's on them. Will this work ok on a Mk 4, or will I need to play with the suspension to adjust? The little man at the tyre garage tells me it should be fine. I am, of course, buying tyres from him (hmmm) Please bear in mind my only previous 'modding' experience was the addition of an air freshener. Vanilla it was............

The wheel and tyre choice should be fine, you could even go for some slightly wider tyres with 8x17, but you might find that it will make your car look like an offroader! A set of lowering springs, or coilovers will sort this out, if it is a problem.

Just re-read your post, I thought it said 205 tyres, not 255. I wouldnt go any wider than that. They will be great for grip, but with wider tyres comes the flip side of reduced peformance, and fuel consumption etc. Its a finley balanced choice between grip and drag. I think the widest I would want is probably about 225. They will still look huge, but shouldnt start adversely affecting you too much.

Hmmm. Ordered the buggers already!!! Will see if blokey at tyre place can adjust size as he looked up size in his little tyre book. Thankfully it's a TDi and not a V6. Should still be able to afford to run it. Never horse the car anyway. Off to procure K&N 57i kit. BH (better half) is blissfully unaware of my credit card activities. After all, when we got PC she did say no porn so only doing what I'm told!

Cheers,

G.

Judge?? Nah, I seem to have a reasonable grip on reality and know what year it is. And don't get me started on Magistrates....... With Probation Service at mo' but deal with the real 'nasties', fiddlers murderers etc. Bored though, so prob' try for fuzz in summer, although NOT traffic div'. Most of my colleauges should be locked up, are self harmers, a couple have been in the happy house on Sect 28's, and most keep the pharmacuetical industry booming, Prozac and the like. I just don't meet the criteria. And me boss is called Crawford. Really......

Re; turning circle, don't know. Tyre man says he can sharp sendthem back so well see. Crap waiting for wheels to arrive in post 'though. Has to be said, Edworthys are bloody efficent. Tim was spot on so well done fella.

Cheers blokes. Off for a poke around. Top site this just need to settle in.

:o Well I trust the bloke coz he's my cousin and is v. knowledgeable. However, I bet he makes the odd mistake and this is prob' one of 'em. His big Hi Q tyre guide book thing came up with the size, something to do with correct diameters fo gearing and speedo calibration????? Come to think of it heis rather stressed the mo', wife, kids, dogs, graft...

Pic's will be here when I read thread on other section and lift my ma's digi'  camera. Been in the gallery and there's some smooth motors on. Comp' v hot!!

G. When ya see pics you'll figure reason for username!!! Pearlescent Cosmic Green is certainly a 'grower'!!

;) Soon see! Think of it as an experiment at the expense (although should be able to change em) of some new txxt who's only had a golf 6 months andhas no clue what he's doing. If  they don't fit she will go mad... It's fair to say I'm a tad apprehensive at this time. Where's me stella????

That u'r 4 in gallery? Nice lookin' motor. Mine's green. Oh god, what was I thinking.....................

;D Ok, wheels and tyres are on the car. Wheels are Rondell 58's and the tyres are Falken Z1EX 255/40/17 94W'S. Re; prior concerns on tyres, they fit no bother, and dont adversly affect turning circle. You can, however, certainly feel them drag a bit!! Insurer was gonna charge me an extra ?122 for the privilege, so have changed insurer and saved ?212 in the process. Next drop springs a touch and get ECU tinkered with.

I'm glad it worked out for you. Can you get some pictures up in the gallery? I'd love to check out the tyres - they must look so wide!!

Tell ya what, they did look huge when they first went on, but lookin at them now, they just blend, y'know? Rears could probably do with being an inch wider, the cars can so take them. Our kid has a mk3 but they would look decidedly odd on his. mk4's can just swallow them. Still working on pic's, really am no good with technology!!!

Wow! That's wide.  I've got 225/45/17's and these track quite a lot (follow grooves in road) due to their width. 255 is monstrous!!!  ;D  (that's an extra inch wide)

Total diameter is almost exactly the same though with 255/40's

;)Go on, give them a go. Y'knowyou want to. Tyres were only ?408 ftted and balanced. Mind you he did discount thedeal. V. nice lookin motor by the way. Had thought about RS6 repro's but thought the quality was compromised, and OE's are extortionate! There seems to be some historic debate re; 3 door versus 5 door. Why??

That's pretty cheap for tyres.  :o

I got expensive ones - ?120 each!  8) (Pirellis on back and Bridgestones on front)

Hey, its all relative. D'ya spend the money on the car, or piss it up against the wall?? As long as it sticks to the tarmac and goes round the corners! Our lass could waste that at the Metrocentre on 'groovy threads' in 15 mins!!  Thing is, me tyres last longer than the summer fashion season and yet i do wrong? That Inky blue? Nice colour, although the Anthracite is bang on. Rare as hens teeth though. I like theTT's but there are loads of Audi'sround my way so they just blendtoo much. Bloody estate agents.

I figured I'd shell out on Tyres cos they connect you to the road.

Yep, car is Ink Blue.   8)

I like 3 door myself (that's why I bought mine).  The 5 door's rear windows are a different shape (have a divider in them too).

My wheels are original Audi ones (?1000 new w/o tyres) - got em off ebay on the cheap tho'  ;)

I cant beleive the difference in tyre prices - its huge! I pay ?55 for a 215/40/14 continental sport for my cab, just because they are to fit smaller rims, even though they are still a low profile trye.
It starts to get a bit expensive when you get the big alloys on there!

try this place for cheap tyres though http://www.mytyres.co.uk/Tyres.html (http://www.mytyres.co.uk/Tyres.html)

Even on that site, it's well over ?100 for tyres in my size (and that doesn't include valves + balancing!)  :P
