My offside top mount appears to be causing problems as the bearing seems dried up etc, contributing (if not causing) my stiff/lumpy steering.
My question is, how much should I be looking to pay for G60 top mounts (some on ebay at £23), and how difficult would it be for a novice to fit them? How long should it take an amateur and do i need any special tools?
I'm also assuming G60 mounts will be stronger than the 8v GTi mounts?
edit: would this be a good buy, seems to have bump stops amongst other things? (what are the other bits?) http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VW-GOLF-MK2-GTI-CORRADO-TOP-MOUNT-KITS-PAIR-C162_W0QQitemZ190210239582QQihZ009QQcategoryZ9889QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Looks OK, also from a company so if they don't fit you can return them or exchange them.
I'd rather go for OEM as we all know what aftermarket parts can be like
Have you tried a local scrappy? You still got 10 days to decide on that item on the bay.

id prefer new parts as a general rule, but also scrappies around here have cars stacked 3 high, i dont fancy being up a ladder with the cars rocking to and fro whilst trying to beat the struts off the car!
i have used that seller MANY times and the parts seem A1, plus they have great service - once they mis-picked a part, i contacted them and within 12 hours they responded with "dont worry about sending it back, we'll send the right part to you 1st class" - so now i have a speedo drive gear gasthering dust in the garage

Quality
What ya waiting for then? buy it before someone else does.

£8.25ea here

+ postage tho I think.

You'll need special tools. IIRC - you'll need the tool to undo the strut-top nut, as there are two slots to get it undone.
-
Yeh, that two slot nut thing should really be un-done with a special tool but I found carefull hammering and screwdriver-ing was good enough and I managed to avoid damaging the thread. (modifying a socket will also work well, if you have a spare/crap one) I also need g60 top-mounts as when I put coilovers on there was suddenly more of a gap than before in the engine bay.
Thanks Organisys for that link!
-
you'll also need spring compressors.
I changed my front and back shocks and springs on my dads drive in about 3 hours. I had never attempted it before, just done it logically and safely.
you will need a wheel alignment done as well when your finished

to remove the top nut from the strut i welded a 13mm nut to a deep socket ( if you need size of socket i can dig it out and let you know) then it was a case of locating allen key to stop shocker piston turning and undoing with 13mm spanner
then the tool for undoing the 2 slot nut i ordered did not turn up in time so i used a flat blade screwdriver and a hammer and to be honest once the spring is compressed it taps off pretty easy refitting is reverse of what has just being done but make sure springs are located against stops (raised bit in shock and top mount) there is also two nuts and bolts at the base of the shock
it is pretty simple if you have the right tools a novice that wants to learn needs to start buying tools at some point (if you need it or its going to come in use buy it)

Not sure why the focus on G60 parts. Its an 8v so buy normal top mounts. The only reason the G60 top mount is different, and iirc is the same part from the 16v, is because the front of the G60 and 16v are heavier than the 8v because of the supercharger and 16v head respectively.
So really you just need the standard top mounts and not worry about G60 top mounts.
-
the suggestion has always been to use g60 mounts though... as they are beefier!
-
It's not a difficult job but you must be careful when compressin the spring. Firstly undo the 2 bolts holding the strut to the hub. Then undo the top nut on the mount... i used a spark plug socket with a combined spanner section along with a allen key... Once undone the strut will drop out. To take the mount off you will have to get some spring compressors and compress them with care and caution. Once the mount has enough slack then you undo the strut nut. This needs a special tool but i got round it using a old VW hollow wheel brace and cut off pieces to make the notches to fit on nut. This will release the mount and re-fittin is the reverse of wot you done.
I recommend using Genuine VW mounts as aftermarket always wear out and it will be a pain to keep replacing them... besides you'll have to keep doing your wheel alignment everytime you remove the struts.

if you want beefier rubber top mounts get some from a mk3 vr6
-
this is starting to turn into a garage job as i need the car for work and i have no spring compressors
i wish it was the project that needed them!

Sorry to bring up an old thread but how much should I expect to pay for new g60 mounts from a dealer?
I got quoted £57 I think (including nasty nasty vat)
Does this seem about right?
