Right then,
There have been a few posts of good roads to drive in the past, but this ones going to be a sticky if it takes off.
Try and post pics of nice strips of tarmac if you can too
Been said before and I'll say it again - The A57 snake pass and it's now even better since most of it has been re-tarmacced.
Also found a lovely bit of black stuff coming up out of Hathersage over to Ringinglow.
Fiddlers Elbow the road starts off as (GOOD NAME )
Here's a pic looking back down the hill.

Come on then, get your roads and pics up.

That does look fun Baj

I use that bit of road a lot Hurdy (fiddlers elbow) it's my regular route from over here to any of our sites between Sheffield or S c u n thorpe. It's actually quicker than using the Sat Nav to get across country.
Edit (damn swear filter)
-
That Brecon Beacon shot - sure its the same one the car mags inc EVO use - been watching footage of the Aston Vantage and DB9 sure its the same road???Anyone???
-
Yes it's quite a well known road ... fantastic both in scenery and to drive on.
I'm sure it's been used by 5th Gear and Top Gear also at some point.
-
 Pick a road, any road, up the West Coast of Scotland then on to the Highlands and back

I do belive I have "got me knee down" on that bend in my biker days!!!
It was difficult finding a good left-hander and made a change from scratchin the local traffic islands.
Excellent road!!
-
Did the Butter Tub pass today, not another car in sight.
Been said before, but its still a good blast.
-
BaJ, your car in Tornado Red looks cool, and that bit of road looks great! I bet you had a window down to listen as you floored it up there?!
-
u guys live in the sticks?
-
Not me ... I drove the 150 miles there just for the roads ... then drove 150 miles back
-
In the frozen North - try this, 14.9 miles of pure sex:
Hexham to Edmundbyers via Blanchland on the B6306
Very scenic and the route goes past Slaley and the Derwent Reservior. Some very open and twisty bits.
Awesome but watch out for the sheep and other wildlife :undecided:
Sorry no pics but done this many times and always love it. Beware a very blind and tight right/left hairpin as you pass the reservior on the nearside about 2 mile before Blanchland
Enjoy

In the Lakes - Bowness on Windermere to Cockermouth, travelling North via A591, passing Lake Windermere, Rydal Water, Grasmere, Thirlmere, Derwentwiter (all on nearside and very scenic) and then via Winlatter Pass (very rugged) to the A66. Equally good in reverse :smug:
About 33 miles all in - budget for 50 mins + to take in all the wonderful scenery - some good looking sheep thereabouts
Cass
-
And one more in the Lakes - again watch out for the roaming sheep - not a pervert, honest - some good looking ones though
Ambleside to Pooley Bridge, northeast via Kirkstone Road and Kirkstone Pass (very narrow in part, single track with passing places), passing Brothers Water (on nearside) and Ullswater (on the offside). You pass close to Aira Force waterfall - well worth a stop/look
Approx 18 miles of fabulous scenery and winding roads
Commissions now being accepted fro the Lake District National Park

Reading this thread got me googling, found a couple of links that might be a good reference:

All right. First time I noticed this thread...
Will add my two cents for whatever South African drivers are here on the forum to try.
1. Chapmans Peak. Beautiful Scenery, lovely sound and of course the chance of possible rock falls which means you have an excuse to drive as fast as possible.
2. Black Hill in Simons Town. Road surface is a bit bumper but the road is always quiet and the corners are superb.
3. Sir Lowries Pass. Nice uphill going into some hectic turns. Dont get too confident.... You may find spill diesal (This is common) on the final corner.... Drifting is possible. I have personal experiance of this.
4. Theewaterskloof Dam Pass. Once again. Scenery is incriedible and the road is fun. Beware of corners that randomly become sharper in the middle of the corner. You have to be a good driver for this mountain Pass.
5. Grabouw. Close to the Theewaterskloof Dam Pass but more fun and less tricky.
There we are. My favourite out of all of them? Chapmans Peak. Its just too much fun

Just came down the A838 from Durness (far, far North West), via Ullapool to Inverness yesterday; utterly fantastic, especially the part from Kylesku to Loch Assynt. No traffic, no cops, no cameras - just the odd sheep. I did overtake four motorbikes at one point, though they were only cruising at about 50. Look it up and book your holidays now!
-
OK - Here's my favourite, down the road from Dubai in a place called Al Ain. It's a 17km road snaking up a 4,500ft mountain, with no traffic...
At the top of the mountain is a palace and a hotel. A few days ago some friends of mine were staying there and during breakfast a man walked through the foyet in full race suit and helmet - Stiggie's in town!
They closed the mountain road for a few hours (along with a stretch of road in Abu Dhabi), 'borrowed' 3 Veyrons and a Koenigsegg from a few slightly better off locals, and starting filming. It's either going to appear in an upcoming Top Gear magazine or on the show....
And here's the proof....

that' an amazing road and pictures too
-
So does the stig really walk around with the helmet on all the time??? Someone out there must know who he is!!!
My money is still on Damon H! :lipsrsealed:
-
There have been a couple of names thrown about, but it's currently Julian Bailey - ex F1 driver - I think.....
Fantastic road - I recently went up there with the local VW club, but one R32 driver put their car into a wall and shut the mountain road.
These R32 drivers, eh, relying too much on all wheel drive! Talent deficit!
Only joking - luckily no-one was hurt but is was a shame as we only had one run up the hill... The R32 has been off road for 6 weeks now, with about 6000 GBP of damage and repair bills - ouch!

i live not far from here!! very good road especially if your a biker! but even more especially if your a GTI driver cos you can really get sum speed up around there (within the limits of the law of course!)
-
Yes, thats a location known as Tro'r Gwcw or Cuccoo's corner on the A4069 Brynamman to Llangadog Road. It has been my "bench mark" road for years as I live 1 mile away from the foot of the mountain .... travelled all of the UK ... and well .. I've not found a more thrilling road. The best part is over the other side so to speak, the cattle grate to Llangadog ... Awesome.

Cool, Llandeilo, not far then. If you'd ever like to meet for a photoshoot or just for the sake of meeting up to discuss the car email me on g60turbo@msn.com, are you off to margam park on sunday for Volksfest ? Mine'll be the Red ED30 on the Swansea Club GTi Stand.

The Stig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yeQwi-8bCEA
Also, included on the Health and Safety report done for Hammond's near fatal crash the other year, it listed Ben Collins as an "advisor".
-
Just to add my two cents, I went to school in Brecon for 7 years and got to drive the beacons roads every weekend! I actually looked froward to going to school just for the drive! (only during the years i held a licence obviously!)
-
Nice article...
http://pistonheads.co.uk/news/default.asp?storyId=18638
-
I'll add my tuppence...
The Stig is Ben Collins. When "Team Top Gear" ran that BMW 3 Series in the 24 Hour race at Silverstone last year the organising club would not let them register the 4th driver as The Stig and the results were published as "Team Top Gear" drivers J Clarkson/R Hammond/J May/B Collins and reported in Autosport the following week.
As for roads, three spring to mind
1. The A686 from Penrith to the Haydon on the A69 to the west of Hexham - great in either direction but I prefer it from Penrith. The climb from there to the cafe at the top of the hill is great fun. Just be careful, the Cumbria Police Headquarters is on this road just outside of Penrith.
2. The B6255 between Ingleton and Hawes past Ribblehead. 15 miles, once leaving Ingleton the first 4 miles are fast and straight once past Ribblehead there are more fast open stretches as well as some slower sections. It's not the best surfaced and the weather can be a challenge.
3. Finally, the B1363/A170/B1257 from York to Stokesley via Helmsley. Great road, great scenery... just overpoulated with bikers these days (and as a result, police)...
Cheers,
Corgi.
