One month ago I took out P.O. insurance subject to proof of Cat.2 security. I tried to fax this to the number supplied but it took 3 calls to customer service to obtain a no. that worked. Two weeks ago I received a letter warning my cover might be terminated if I failed to supply proof. I called again and was told 'sorry that letter should not have been sent, we are satisfied with the faxed certificate'. I was initially given a 1 month insurance certificate (expiry date 29 March) so today I called them to make sure the new one had been sent. To my horror I was told that due to an error on their part they had cancelled my policy and I was now driving uninsured. They were very sorry but all they could do was issue a new policy and I would have to pay the full premium again, it might take 3 weeks to refund the original. There appears to be no comeback and the financial services ombudsman is not interested. They cancelled my policy by mistake, if I had been involved in an accident or stopped by the police I assume it would have been my hard luck. Dont these people answer to anyone?

I would expect you'd have a reasonable case in court if it came to that, but you'd certainly be 'Guilty until proven innocent' I think.
There should be a law that if motor insurers cancel a policy for any reason, they should call you the minute they know it's been cancelled or something...

what you don't tape all your conversation these days the government does!

do the data protection thing on them....all your details including recordings and transcripts of all call's. then put an official compliant to the insurer (thats why the ombudsman dosent want to know...as you must complain to the co first and they only get involved once they give a final answer).....
I did this with another insurer who despite sending me letters saying my renewal was due and would continue unless i cancelled, then collecting dd's and issuing me an insurance cert, this was a time when they were taken over by n.u and my policy didn't actually exist!! exept on paper (they issued) and i had to start a new policy! and then despite paying about £200 for a non exisiting policy they would not refund as I was covered!! i asked them what I had paid for as there was no policy in force... they bullsh!tted a bit/lots and still said no refund! the ombudsman sorted that for me with interest

That was exactly what the ombudsman said but the company were very arrogant despite admitting they should have actioned a new insurance certificate, when they received the security fitting certificate so I'm unlikely to get any joy from them. Took out new cover today with another company. Bet I wait forever for the promised refund!

Received 2 letters yesterday (28/3) from the Post Office. One dated 20/3 warning of impending cancellation and the other dated 27/3 informing me it was cancelled on the 26/3. All because one department failled to inform another that they had received my immobiliser fitting certificate. The admin. at this company is a complete mess, if you had a claim you could be in for a rough time. Remember they acknowledged receipt of the fitting certificate on MARCH 14th!

Received refund of premium from Post Office insurance today, quicker than expected but guess what, wrong amount. The admin. at this company is a shambles.
