How would you go about painting a small area of your bumper. Its the front drivers corner (where my silly mother decided to catch with her car )?
I have a mystic blue gti.
-
not 100% but you may need to spray the whole bumper, unless its just a light scratch then use the paint pens. If it is a deep scratch, probs need to fill it, etc. Post a pic of it.
LL ;)

hi, if you can colour match the damaged area it can be blended in with very fine wet and dry (1500 ish) and an electric polisher and cutting compound.
but if you haven't painted or done anything like this it can be a bit daunting..

That's a respray job mate.
For what it'd cost in rattle cans, rubbing compund & polish you'd be better off dropping it into to a spray shop.
They'll do a better job than you could with a can anyway!
-
cheers fella , i'll have a look how much these charge for doin that .. but knowin spanish prices for EVERYTHIN

I'm the process of respraying my big bumpers off a mk2 at the moment. Its time consuming work but the more time you put into the preperation the more it pays off. fact! i think the part you want to repair is plastic, and the whole lot wants doing really so you need to:
rub the whole lot down with some 200-400 grit
go over it lightly with 1000ish grit wet and dry paper.
filler the holes
when dry sand the filler back and then use fine hole filler to fill any tiny scratches or small chips and then leave to dry and sand that back flush
then you could probably use a 500ml can of PLASTIC primer and primer the whole lower section.(you can tape off the top black section with masking tape and newspaper.)
then flat that back with 1500 grit wet and dry
then put the top coat on with your colour coded rattle can (problem is when i did mine apline white, L90e, theres 6 different shades of alpine white so the colour match isn't always perfect)
then you'd need to flat that back with 1500
then put some clear laquer ontop
then flat that back again
then polish it!!
now make yourself another cuppa, stand back and admire the work of art you just made!!! If you did it yourself it would take a bit of time as you'd have to wait for the paint to dry and the filler etc also the wet and drying takes a while. It seems a bit daunting at first but you might aswell start spraying somewhere!! its good fun!
-
ah well ill have a go , it sounds like fun
-
dont listen to them mate,
just paint the whole bumper yourself, it will look mint and its really not hard
heres a pic of my front bumper wich i sanded , fillered, primered and painted myself using halfords spray cans

I'm in the process of doing ALOT of panel prep right now, bumpers, wing. bonnet, grill, wing mirrors & light surrounds.
It's horrible, very time consuming & dusty!
Have to say though I'm not a fan or rattle cans, you can get a good finish (as seen above) but it's hard going & as cans arn't cheap the amount you'd use wouldn't be more less than having a pro do it once you'd done the prep. That's what I'm doing :afro:
Also when you flat back the paint, you should be looking at 3000 grit or close to it, 1500 & you'll sand straight back through it!

no need for 3000! you would have to go at it for a while with 1500 wet to go through, you shouldnt need to take much paint off, just flat it back, so not much sanding required if the paint work is good.
i use 1500 - 2000 to flat back and have painted a few cars.
also i agree that rattle cans are a last resort if you ask me, the finish is nowhere near as good as a pro job.
-
You won't of polished them up by hand though I bet!
Takes a looooong time!

very true (should have said that.. sorry), i use a mop and compound, i think i makes a big differance.

My bonnet is scratched to buggery, and got a nasty dent in the drivers side of it (looks like a key went through it or something). Would it be worth be just buying a new bonnet and getting it painted or try repair this one?
-
My bonnet's in same way as is the front bumper I would probably just cough up dough and get someone who's got the time and paitence to do it.
-
i painted the rear bumper on my 1.8 driver out of rattle cans from halfrauds. (was an odd metalic green so had to have it mixed up) only used 1 full can of mixed paint, one can of grey primer and a big can of laquer. the bumper was originally dusty mauve.
