Title: electric mirrors and coolant!
Post by: gtitdi on 26 March 2008, 23:31
hi guys

just after a bit of advice on a couple of probs with the golf

1) when i select R on the electric mirrors both mirrors move, although L is ok. i'm guessing this will be the switch?
2) every time i start the car from cold the 'check coolant' message comes up, it goes out after about 5 minutes and doesn't come on if the car's already warm when started. the coolant is between the max and min lines on the header tank, any ideas? sensor in the tank?

thanks!

1, The mirrors are supposed to do that, it's to allow you to easily adjust them for different drivers
2, No idea!

Umm when you select L and R only one mirror should move!

Like the left one when you select 'L' and right one when you select 'R'

as already stated the MK4's mirrors will both move when you're on R, this also helps when you're parking in a bay as well as adjusting for other drivers (not that you would let anyone else drive your golf)

regarding the coolant, try taking the top off and giving the hoses around the radiator a few squeezes this should get any air bubbles out of the system, at which point top the fluid up abit, run engine on idle and check the level again.

it could just be a sensor though

1) This is not a fault - as the others have said.

2) I had this issue last winter - I clearly had coolant, and it was warming up as the car was used, so no real sign of a problem.  It sorted itself out, not had an issue since.  What Ridge is saying to try sounds like a good idea - worth a go for free- better than a kick in the jewels by a mule!

The coolant issue will prob be the sensor in the expansion bottle. Whole  new one is about £12
Had a new bottle fitted when i had a new thermostat fitted
