Title: 2007 56 plate GTI - thoughts?
Post by: Steve78 on 26 March 2008, 19:50
Lads, can I have your thoughts on this deal?

2007 56 plate GTI
Silver Metallic
Multifunction computer - Highline
Front centre armrest with storage rear 2 air vents cupholders
6XCD
Winter pack
18" Monza II alloy wheels
EU Supplied Vehicle
7500 miles

£15750

The finance deal I've got is pretty good on paper.  I give them a V Reg Astra & £1000 and I'll be paying back just under £230 a month on a 4 year lease purchase, balloon payment at the end £7k or I can trade it in for something else blah blah etc.

Car is in a fantastic condition in the photos (alloys are flawless) and I will go and see it on Saturday.  What do you think of the deal though?  Yay or nay?

Yay

Looks a bargain on paper !

I think I'd check it out carefully though, as there were some "horror" imports a while ago that had been stood in fields for years.  Make sure you have the remaining VW UK warranty you would expect (2 years from the PDI date in service book) - give VW UK a ring with the reg. number - and check it's history, owners etc.   Make sure it's to UK spec, especially the alarm.

Other than that, sounds a cracking deal to me, car can only be just over a year old

Make sure it's to UK spec, especially the alarm.

What does EU supplied mean exactly?  I queried this and he said it's fully UK spec and due to the cars age it hasn't had time to stand still in a field

It does look a good deal on paper.  It's one of those things that appears too good, do you know what I mean?  But the car looks great in photos - maybe the dealers just had a bad month and wants to shift it before the end of the month?!

I think this is with the same garage I bought my car from.

They do a good finance deal and there cars are good quality. Check the APR you should get 8.9%.

The reason for the price is because it's an import, check its registered with VW and what the situation with warranty etc is, though the supplying garage will give you a 12 month warranty on it as part of the deal.

If you've got far to travel, PM me and I'll pop in and have a look at it for you tomorrow. The only negative about the garage is their very reluctant to give you a test drive until your ready to sign on the dotted line.

It means it's an import

Basically that means you have only 2 years warranty with VW UK, and not the usual 3 years you'd get with a UK supplied car.

Definitely check out the Pre Delivery Inspection stamp and date - your warranty will expire 2 years after the PDI date

Also check it has a spacesaver sparewheel (and not a puncture repair kit)

Other things to check are the internal alarm, 8 working speakers (check out the rear ones), English manuals and service books.

Don't get me wrong, there's nowt wrong with a good EU import - I'm on my third   .... just be aware of what to check out and the difference in warranty.

If you get the car's VIN number you can type into here and find out a few things :-

Quite a shocker !!

I'm sure yours will be OK ... it sounds a reasonable dealership

you can get spacesavers on E-bay for around £50 so don't let this prevent a purchase if the price is right and the car's as good as it sounds.

Good luck on Saturday  .. hope it goes OK

Sounds a tremendous deal - and you know the general rule of thumb. For example, If you look on Pistonheads there is an 06 Black dsg going for under £14k, but its been cat D repaired however the ad doesnt mention it...but seller is up front about it when you contact him.
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/408454.htm (http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/408454.htm)

At the other end of the spectrum I have two other examples for you//...  Arnoldclark Glasgow South contacted me about a similar specified car UK demo with 7k on clock, 3 door at £17988!! They reckoned best price would be a couple of hundred below this....

TBH these dealers are charging ridiculously high prices, search on ebaymotors theres even one muppet dealer in Perth trying to off an 06 for £20,590!!

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2006-Volkswagen-Golf-2-0-T-GTI-FSI-Tornado-Red_W0QQitemZ220072318359QQihZ012QQcategoryZ9873QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/2006-Volkswagen-Golf-2-0-T-GTI-FSI-Tornado-Red_W0QQitemZ220072318359QQihZ012QQcategoryZ9873QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem)

Good Luck, I paid £15.7k for an 05 (55) DSG 25k with all the gubbins and I thought I was getting a  reasonable deal given the 05 (55) plates and the eyewateringly high prices of some examples around....if you are paitent though I am sure you will get the right car for you at the right price. On reflection I think I paid a little too much for the car given that I bought it privately.

Also remember resale, if its an import it may be harder to shift on later.....if you trade in the stealers will try to use it as a bargaining chip so expect about £500 less than a UK car at trade in time, if not more.

In fairness this is a very reputable dealer that I bought my GTI from and Topher his R32.

They are a main dealer for another brand but have developed a side business specialising in sports cars - GTI's, R32's, Porsche, Lotus etc etc.

I very much doubt these guys would be selling a complete dog, my guess is that the bloke part ex'd it against something else and they played the "its an import" card on him.

I live round the corner so am going to pop in and check it over this afternoon for Steve to save him the long journey if there is something dubious about it.

I paid similar money to yours for a similar car, don't think you got that bad a deal. Don't forget we've got the DSG models and whatever the manual guys say the DSG's command a good premium over the manuals and you dont have the import supermarkets selling the DSG versions for £3K under list like you do the manuals.

Soz to hijack. I have recently been promoted and what not and work and get £290 (-tax :() a month for a car or get a company car. I've deciede to opt out of company car and have my own motor as I think its by far the better deal. I've just seen that your paying £230 for this. Do VW do a "lease" deal. Could I walk into a dealer and talk to them about this or is through a 3rd party? Dont be getting me excited about a MK5 lol (I was meant to be looking at either 1.8T or a BMW and now the MK5 is on the cards lol)

Mate don't do it!!! Take the company car.

£290 x 12 = £3500 per annum. You'll get taxed and NI'd on it meaning 30% of its gone = £2450 = £200 a month.

You have to purchase a car, insure it, tax it, service it, maintain it, put tyres on it etc etc.

I am a car nut, but if my company offered to swap my £5.5K car allowance for any decent company car I'd take it.

The last time I had a company car an entire street I'd been parked on had their rear windows smashed by people looking for valuables in the boot, it was so refreshing not having to make insurance claims or worry about the cost of repair.

Sorry if that sounds a bit negative, but most companies scrap the company car scheme for a reason - It costs more to lease and run the car than it does to give staff a car allowance. The only real way to make it work is to buy a £2-3K car so you dont suffer much from depreciation and get it serviced at independent garages but from what you say I guess thats not what your after.

You'll need a physical insurance certificate to tax your car with.

Being done

My insurer is couriering a document to them tomorrow on a pre-1pm delivery so it can be taxed.  I'm signing the papers on Saturday and picking it up on Monday evening.  At least that's the plan at the moment...

I had to pay £7.50 for a next-day service.  If it isn't there tomorrow I'm going to go knee-capping at Elephant!

All the papers and documents signed!   I collect it on Monday evening, woohoo!

During the test drive, we ran out of fuel after 3 miles so we were stuck in the sticks for half an hour whilst we awaited rescue   Salesman was severely embarrassed but it gave me time to sit in the car and play with all the gadgets and stuff.

Mike, you should be getting that £50!  I did mention it to them!

Maybe we'll cross paths another day!    I noticed on the display that a service was due, so they are sending it to VW for a service on Monday morning!  So I'm feeling like I've had a right result with the car.

I dealt with Angela regarding the papers etc, do you know her?

Yeah she's great, she is their "Finance" woman.

I found her pretty good at trying to ensure you got the best deal and she's not too pushy with all the add-ons.

Good news about the service, the local VW aren't too impressed with them nicking all their GTI and R32 customers.

Don't forget to check the fuel tank before you leave....

There is a Sainsburys petrol station just round the corner from them if you carry along the main road that runs in front of there dealership (with the dealers on your right hand side) you'll get to a big roundabout at which you want the 3rd exit and you should see it.

They reckon there selling more Golfs than Volvos at the moment.

They had a nice looking blue R32 being picked up last weekend as well.

OMG!!! You got such a good deal there babe IMO.

Mines is a 2007 56 plate, silver, but came with no specs what so ever!! No CD changer, no comp, none of that, it had 6000 miles on it and 17" monza 2's and i paid...............£18 1/2k :embarassed:

Traded in my 52 plate 206 for 2 1/2k and paid the rest there and then so its all bought and paid for. But the more i think about it and as time passes im starting to wonder if i got such a good deal or if they had big windows

Eather way im still in love with the beauty

I wouldn't worry too much about yours.

The Sales Manager said it would've been £2K more if it wasn't an import so that puts it more in your ball park.

Steve did get a bargain though as it was a very good import.

Hmmm still feel a little gutted when i hear things like this though!!

Cant help but feel i am constantly paying thru the nose for this car. Im spending a fortune in petrol. I'v just gone and dropped it off at the garage to have all its tints redone coz the other ones were totally botched AND as if that wasnt enough while i was at the garage i was told that i paid £400 too much for my suspention!!! Grr.

Yes, I'm chuffed to bits with it

Two weeks ago, I nearly paid the same amount for a 55 plate with a slightly lower spec!  To get a high-spec 2007 56 plate for £16k is a fantastic deal!
