I have a bosch ecu and knock sensor (cream plug) and just received a seimens knock sensor (brown plug). it is from a similar aged passat and is in new condition. the plug is the same fitment, but the sensor casing is a slightly different size (same bolt size)... does this matter? any compatibilty issues? it is due to be fitted tomorrow as the car is in for a service etc.
the old sensor is way gone, the actual wiring is split in places :undecided:

have you got a part number on each of them?
if you supply me both nubmers i can cross ref them with the Oe and confirm.. youll probably find they are jsut supersessions. :smiley:

thanks for the offer! sadly i dont have numbers, all i can tell you is the bosch has a cream coloured plug and the seimens has a brown one.
i won the nearly new sensor on ebay @ 99p :smiley: so im guessing its worth a shot.

Trial and error mate... you'll know if it works or not but changing them over.
Easy enough job... just use the right torque on the knock sensor bolt!

it has hopefully been done today, ready to collect in a sec i hope.
its in for a service and steering componant inspection (long story) so i'd just aswell have the garage fit it (plus i have no torque wrench)

ok so the new knock sensor appears to be doing what its meant to, as in the engine will pink once/twice under heavy load then its fine. much better than it was. the old sensors wiring was pretty much non-existant.
the underlying factor of the pinking appears to be a coked up head although i cant justify the labout hours in changing/decoking the head. plus i have just had a £216 service bill today :cry:

HI Chris, any evedence of the car being more responsive now with the knock sensor replaced? Just wondering as i am having pre ignition probs at the moment. Car seems to be sluggish up to 4k and makes it seem like hard work to get going.
Also, where the hell is it?

its bolted into the front of the block just next to the alternator. check the wiring for damage i.e. splits. to replace you need to torque the bolt to 15 ft/lbs
mine was changed along with a service (oil, filter, plugs, engine flush and new battery to starter cable and new battery to body earth cable as these were rotten). so yes it is more responsive but this is probably due to the service!
