Hi,
I've spent the day reading all the information on retrofitting an MFD2 sat nav to a MKV Golf. I'm confident I can fit it OK, but I have read various stories of issues following installation such as a flat battery after 3 days, door locking and fault code issues etc. For those that have fitted the MFD2, can you confirm if it really is plug and play or does it require any coding with VAGcom? I'm looking for some reassurance before I dive in and fit one. Your help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Joe

Mmm that worries me, i was about to treat myself but was under the impression its a straight swap and off you go?

I had thought the same but became concerned after reading a few horror stories, unless they were just dodgy units? Perhaps someone who has fitted an MFD2 could reassure me? Thanks!

I fitted mine and have had no problems. I had the same worries as you so bought mine from a shop though just incase the unit was faulty. But there was no problem.
With regard to the faults being logged i beleive that they commonly occur if the ignition is turned on when some of the sensors in the dash are unplugged. The on board computer logs a fault as they have something to do with the airbag . If you follow the following you can't go wrong, I mean if i can do it anyone can

Hi, I did my MFD2 about 10 months ago with no problems, its was a straight swap.
The http://vwnavi.com forum if great also this has all the pictures needed

You can use VAG-COM to change the coding from radio to navigation but I didn't until recently and saw no difference.
If you are in any way DIY then its easy.

I fitted a MFD2 DVD into my 05 GTI a few weeks ago, the friend who helped me (who works for company that deals with engine management fault codes for different garages) thought that the VAGcom might need to be told that the NAV unit was installed.
As it turns out it seemed to work fine except that I have difficulty playing audio CDs, they just stop or most of the time the unit thinks An incorrect DVD is inserted.
I am not sure if this is down to a faulty unit or some VAGcom issue (is this why they are on ebay)
I did consider sending it back, but decided it was too much hassle as I wanted to leave the NAV DVD in all the time anyway and use my ipod.
I installed a ribbon cable (half of an IDE cable) into the AUX connector so I could connect the ipod, and connected to the audio line in pins.

Also the instructions that i used and printed out ended up at the local VW dealer as they very interested too see how the swap was done (they had never done one)

did u have your antenna showing like in the guide ?
-
does this give you any better options as i am considering the kenwood unit as you get bluetooth and control the ipod and can see track listings etc, where as the ipod link is shyte on the oem units, it doesn't allow you to do anything.

No this option is just simply audio in via the AUX with no control from any external controls, I just simply fed a 3.5mm jack plug into the bottom of my arm rest, but you can have navigation active at the same time when you are listening. (unlike the internal CD)
-
so you cant listen to music and have the nav on ?

you can listen to music via the radio/AUX Audio/CD changer (if you have one) and use the NAV at the same time, but not the internal CD player because the NAV DVD is in.

Thanks for all the info guys, I think I will getting one off eBay to fit myself. Just one more question, my GTI has a standard 3.5mm aux input in the rear cupholder which I connect my ipod to - I assume this will still work with the MFD2 by just plugging in the same wiring harness?

No mine was the correct type, I think its fakra or someting like that.

so why would the sat nav dvd have to be in all the time?? is this the same as all the units?? i was planning on getting this at a later date but if the DVD has to be in all the time then i wont bother.
-
dvd has to be in for the sat nav to work, its gets the map data from the dvd.
you need the 6 disc changer to listen to cd's at the same time.
-
"you need the 6 disc changer to listen to cd's at the same time"
Or an ipod adapter.
-
Fitted mine about a month ago and am well impressed. It looks better than the std unit and the sound is much better. I have the 6 disc changer so i dont have any problems with not being able to play CD's at the same time.
I do however have my antenna on the top of the dash as i wanted the bestv possible signal. Looks OK i think....
Reccomened

For a 54 plate (Jan05) GTI does it have to be the MFD2? (I assume there is only 1 version of the MFD2) :undecided:

Not sure thats right
Ive got the spec C and the Nav cd has to be in for it to work. The only thing the spec c has is silver buttons
-
im mistaken :embarassed: :embarassed: i read it incorrectly!!
i think its a bit cr@p that you have to have a CD in it!! why is this. in my other cars there is no need for a silly disc so why do VW have a disc  this is stupid!!

Not wishing to hijack the thread - is there a touch screen version of MFD2 Navi - is this Version D. Sure I've read somewhere this is shipping with new cars (maybe it was Manu_R32 that said it). If so this is what I'd get. Do these things integrate ok with iPod cabling in armrest and is it still the playlist track crap I have now?

Current factory Sat Nav is the RNS510 touchscreen unit which has superseded the MFD2. Has a 30gb hard drive for the mapping and any music you wish to install and will also take SD cards in a slot at the front. Been reviewed here several times and there are several previous threads here:

MFD2 is no longer as stated above the RNS510/Trinax is now fitted instead.
MFD2's are still a decent unit for those not wanting to splash out on the RNS510.
I have installed a fair few of them and they are pretty much plug and play. One thing you may need to look at is the wiring to the Aux in and CD Changer if fitted.
I've done a guide for the Octy II which will be similar except for the trim removal -
